Cities, Towns, and/or Counties We Serve:

The Dubuque Regional Humane Society serves a seven-county area in three states covering eastern Iowa, SW Illinois and SW Wisconsin 3,600 square miles and with a population of over 195,000

About Our Shelter:

The Dubuque Humane and Benevolent Society was founded in 1901 for the prevention of cruelty to horses and children. As the gasoline engine replaced horses and "human services" began looking after the need of children, the Dubuque Regional Humane Society evolved and shifted its attention to focus on companion animals.

Our Adoption Process:

The Dubuque Regional Humane Society has the largest selection of adoptable pets in the tri-state area. Our variable pricing for dogs and cats includes initial vaccinations, rabies, microchip, and spay/neuter from one of our on staff vets. It is the law in Iowa that all animals adopted from the DRHS must be spayed or neutered. The DRHS works with over 30 area veterinary clinics so adopters can have the veterinarian of their choice care for their new pet. Microchips allow a lost dog or cat without collar or tags to be identified and tracked back to its owner. Adopters are also given a pet care kit with a free bag of Science Diet food at Theisen's and one month free pet insurance if you provide your email address.
All adopters are carefully interviewed and screened during the adoption process. Adoption is a lifetime commitment, so adopters are encouraged to bring the entire family, including their current family pet(s), to meet with the potential new pet before making a final decision. We typically have other small animals and birds available for adoption as well. Costs vary by species. Senior citizen discounts and gift certificates are also available. See the enclosed Schedule of Fees for more information about our adoption packages.

Why should you adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life! What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder? When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes. So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
