We Serve the Following Cities, Towns, and/or Counties: We serve Freeport and the surrounding areas, supporting and finding homes for stray and abandoned animals. We promote humane education regarding the care of domestic pets as well as technical support for those community members who do TNR. Our shelter is one of the oldest on Long Island and has evolved into a compassionate waystation for our furry friends with the anticipated end being a loving forever home.
Freeport Animal Shelter
About Our Shelter
We are a private, no-kill shelter that functions as a 501c. Our organization is striving to upgrade our facility and support the local stray and abandoned animal population through the generosity of private donors and animal adoptions.
As one of the oldest animal shelters on LI, we struggle to maintain quality services for our animals. Over the past year, and with the struggling economy, we have seen large increases in costs for medications, veterinary care, food and mandatory kennel staff to help keep things running.
When we are lucky enough to have donations that assist us with projects, we continue to upgrade our facility. Our cat room enclosures and expanded outdoor runs are just two examples of what significant monetary support can accomplish, yet we need so much more to continue our forward momentum. We want to renovate our dog runs and bring them to a higher level of quality, expand the cat enclosures, renovate our isolation and treatment areas and the list goes on and on...
Winter is here and with it, costs for heating (fuel costs have simply skyrocketed!) Our shelter is in significant and sustained need of monetary donations, food, medications, veterinary services, contracting and renovation services(electrical, plumbing, painting, carpentry, landscaping etc.), amenities for the dogs and cats(baskets, treats, dog blankets, dog risers(kuranda beds to keep them off the concrete run floors at night) etc.
Freeport is trying ever so hard to raise the standards at the shelter, but will not be able to do this without generous support from the public. Remember, our physical plant is actually very, very old! If ever there was a shelter that needed benefactors, it is ours. Every penny that comes in goes to animal welfare for Freeport animals.
Our organization continues to strive towards incorporating the very best of animal rescue and care with a heart, where the animals rule. If you feel shelters should function this way, then support our dreams and donate.
This shelter is literally being run on love right now (November 2009) and very little money. We continue to desperately require generous support from the public. We function solely on donations from people such as yourselves.
We love our animals and want to find them good homes. In the meantime, while they reside with us, we would like to raise their quality of life.
We hope you will help us maintain and foster optimum conditions for our stray and abandoned friends who cannot advocate for themselves. We cannot do this alone and greatly appreciate those of you out there who recognize and support our ongoing efforts.
NOVEMBER 2009 -- URGENT LETTER TO OUR SUPPORTERS!

~~~~WINTER CAT SEASON OVERFLOW!!~~~~
Come in and adopt a kitten or cat and give a stray a break!! Let your furry bundle of joy have a playmate!
Brody is a 2 year old American Staffordshire mix female who is very friendly to people but not other dogs or cats. Beautiful markings and attention seeking, she will easily relate to people. A mush.
Blue is a beautiful Mastif/Blue nose Pitbull mix male. He is solid gray, and 5 and a half years old, unneutered. Sweet disposition but not good with children.
BOTH dogs, were STOLEN from Freeport Animal Shelter in a robbery between early eve on 10/23/08 or early morning on 10/24/08. We are heartbroken that anyone would dream of breaking into our shelter and stealing our dogs. Reference the pics on our site under STOLEN to see both Brody and Blue's pictures. Blues' pics are all we have of him when he was a puppy, but they at least give you a sense of head shape, breed and color.
PLEASE help us find them. We are terribly worried. Reward for information that leads to the return of the 2 dogs stolen.
Please call Freeport Animal Shelter directly at 516-378-4340 or email them from this website. Their lives depend on it. Thanks so much for all of your help!!!
Our Adoption Process
An application is required, along with a vet reference, 2 personal references, and a home check is required prior to adoption being finalized. You must be over 21 to adopt.
All puppies and kittens who are unspayed and unneutered require a spay/neuter deposit (required by state law) in addition to adoption fee ). This is refundable when you show proof of spay/neuter from the veterinarian. We provide you with a certificate for a free spay or neuter done by our vets.
Our shelter offers 3 months of free pet insurance from Pet Assure and free spay/neuter certificates.
Dog adoption and cat
adoption saves lives. Adopt
a dog or adopt a cat and you'll
have a friend for life! What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting
a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats
for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?
When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs
and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of
dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed
is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten
breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.
So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat
or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt
a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane
society or pet rescue group.
