Cities, Towns, and/or Counties We Serve:

We welcome qualified adopters from any state to which we can reasonably arrange transport.

About Our Rescue Group:

Save the Strays Animal Rescue is an all-volunteer public charity and no-kill humane organization whose primary mission is rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming abandoned / unwanted dogs. We try to find permanent homes for the dogs we rescue, both through direct adoption and through cooperation with other like-minded rescues and shelters.

We are an all-breed / mixed-breed rescue. All of our dogs receive age-appropriate vaccinations, and those six months or older are spayed / neutered and tested for heartworms before adoption.

Many of the dogs we rescue are older and / or have serious injuries or medical conditions. We provide whatever veterinary care they need to return them to adoptable condition and / or give them the best possible quality of life. We have rescued and placed blind dogs, dogs with physical disabilities (amputations, congenital deformities, etc.) and dogs with chronic medical conditions that require ongoing medication (heart conditions, diabetes, lupus, Cushings syndrome, etc.). Because we do not euthanize rescued dogs to make room for others, some of these dogs may be with us for a number of years or even for life.

Donate to Our Rescue Group...

Save the Strays is an IRS-recognized 501c3 nonprofit / public charity. All donations are fully tax-deductible. We rely on donations from compassionate animal lovers to help us pay for food, veterinary care, medical aids, prescriptions and other supplies for our dogs. You can help by sending a check or use the Paypal donation button on our website: www.savethestrays.org.

Come Meet our Pets:

We take adoptable dogs to Petco at 1265 Broad Street, Sumter, SC, every month from 2 to 5 p.m. during Petco's National Adoption Days weekends. We alternate between Saturdays and Sundays. Please check our facebook page (facebook.com/savethestraysanimalrescue) for upcoming dates.

Our Adoption Process:

We are a home-based rescue, so we have no shelter facility or regular hours. Our adoption process begins with our application. (Download this Word document at www.savethestrays.org to see our policies and requirements.) Once applicants are approved to adopt, we make an appointment for a meet-and-greet. If all goes well, the applicant can adopt the dog at that time. For adoptions beyond normal driving distance, we try to arrange volunteer transportation to within a one- or two-hour drive of the adopter or recommend professional transport services.

Our adoption fees usually range from $60 to $150, depending on the age, breed and condition of the dog. We sometimes reduce or waive fees for special needs dogs. Adoption fees are fully refundable for 30 days after adoption (minus any costs we must pay for return transport, if applicable.)

Why should you adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life! What is the difference between adopting a dog or puppy versus getting dogs for sale or puppies for sale from a dog breeder? When someone is breeding puppies, they are creating new dogs who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog or puppy and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale from a puppy breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs who must find homes. So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog or adopt a puppy at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
