About Our Shelter:

Early in 1972, a small group of citizens met to form a society for the prevention of cruelty to animals. In March of 1972, the organization was incorporated under the laws of the State of Arizona as a non-profit organization and named the Yavapai Humane Society (YHS). A decision was made in January 1973 to raise $50,000 for the construction of a shelter. This goal was reached in August 1976. With matching funds from the duBois Foundation in Phoenix, a shelter was constructed at its present site on Sundog Ranch Road on land deeded to YHS by the City of Prescott (land to revert to the City if YHS ceases to operate a shelter on the property). The shelter was opened in August 1977.

The facility has the capability of housing 115 dogs and 75 cats. We manage to shelter 5,500 animals a year. We are often filled to capacity but with the help of our foster families, we are able to house additional animals.

Fee includes the following:
Neuter/Spay
Vaccinations
Canine Micro-chipping
Feline leukemia testing
Free vet check

Requirements:
Inter-action meeting required if adopters/residence will have multiple canines.
Must have fenced area.
If adopter rents/leases, must bring a copy of rental/lease agreement.

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life! What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder? When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes. So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
