Heart of America Humane Society
About Our Rescue Group
The Heart of America Humane Society is an all-volunteer, 501(c)3 non-profit organization helping to place shelter and foster animals into permanent homes in and around the greater Kansas City metro area.
Our goal is to save and improve the lives of Kansas City's homeless companion animals by promoting responsible pet ownership. The Heart of America Humane Society (HAHS) partners with two local animal shelters, the Lee's Summit Animal Shelter (Lee's Summit, MO) and the B. Martin-Peck Animal Shelter (Ottawa, KS), to manage a spay/neuter program and to increase pet adoptions into responsible, permanent homes.
Background Our organization does not have a permanent facility or paid staff, so nearly all of our adoptions or other community involvement takes place on-site at pet stores and through other event venues. Some events raise awareness and bring in donations for our animal support efforts, while others help acknowledge and show appreciation for our own volunteers (who perform all duties outside of their regular jobs). HAHS maintains a News and Events Web page to highlight these efforts.

Our Adoption Process
How much does it cost to adopt an animal?
The cost of adoptions of puppies 5 months and younger is $140. While some of the adult dogs coming into our program are already spayed/neutered, all of the puppies require this expense from HAHS. The cost of dogs over the age of 6 months is $120. The cost of one kitten under the age of 5 months is $85 and for 2 kittens it is $130. The cost of one cat over the age of 6 months is $65 and for two cats it is $100.

Dog adoption and cat
adoption saves lives. Adopt
a dog or adopt a cat and you'll
have a friend for life! What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting
a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats
for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?
When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs
and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of
dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed
is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten
breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.
So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat
or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt
a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane
society or pet rescue group.
