Cities, Towns, and/or Counties We Serve:

We provide animal services for Unincorporated Hamilton County, Red Bank, Soddy Daisy, Lakesite, Collegedale and Walden. Anyone interested in ADOPTING are welcome to the shelter no matter what city/town they are from.

About Our Shelter:

When I took over as Executive Director, the Humane Educational Society (HES) had the 5th highest euthanasia rate in the United States and an annual intake of 15,000 animals. In 2 short years there have been dramatic changes at our shelter. In past years the HES received the “Shelter of the Year” award by Animal World for significant improvements in our programs and services in Tennessee. We now adopt 4,000 animals annually and have the 5th lowest euthanasia rate per capita in the South according to renowned animal author Meritt Clifton (less than 5% of adoptable animals). We have the highest adoption rate and the lowest euthanasia rate in Tennessee. Our off-site adoption program accounts for over 1,000 animals annually and we now have off-site adoptions at PetsMart 6 days a week. We also have a very successful low-cost spay/neuter certificate program (over 2,300 in 2 years) and all adopted animals are altered before going to their new home. Our Humane Education Program has already reached over 7,000 students this year and we have captured over 100 cats with our new Trap/Neuter/Return feral cat trapping program.

Why should you adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life! What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder? When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes. So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
