About Our Shelter
The Salt Spring Island Branch of the BC SPCA has a shelter able to house cats and rabbits (& sometimes other small animals) only. We may be able to assist with some dog adoptions upon request.

Our Mission:

The BC SPCA is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in British Columbia. Through its 36 branches located around BC and its provincial office in Vancouver, the BC SPCA provides a wide range of services for more than 53,000 homeless, abused, and abandoned animals around the province. The BC SPCA was created under the auspices of the provincial Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and is the only animal welfare organization in BC which has the authority to enforce laws relating to animal cruelty and to prepare cases for Crown Counsel for the prosecution of individuals who inflict suffering on animals.

We are located on the lower level of the Gulf Islands Veterinary Clinic - turn down Sharp Road and proceed to the rear parking lot of the Clinic. Look for marked SPCA Shelter signs.

Animal Adoption & Viewing Times at the Salt Spring Island Shelter:

  • Monday-Friday: 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

  • Saturday, Sunday & Holidays: By appointment - please contact us.

    • Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life! What is the difference between adopting a cat or kitten versus getting cats for sale or kittens for sale from a cat breeder? When someone is breeding kittens, they are creating new cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of cat or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a cat for sale from a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with cats who must find homes. So rather than buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a cat or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
