Pets at Our Shelter:

Cities, Towns, and/or Counties We Serve:

We are an open-admission shelter serving the counties of Gloucester, Mathews, Middlesex, King and Queen, King William as well as the Northern Neck.

About Our Shelter:

Our primary purpose is to find good, loving homes for the 4,000-plus felines and canines we receive each year, as well as the many "other" animals brought to our facility.

Guided by the principles that every life has value and is worthy of respect and protection, and that animals contribute positively to the health, happiness, and quality of human life, the GMHS mission is to serve both animals and people by strengthening the human-animal bond as we build a more humane community.

The Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society looks toward a day when all domestic and companion animals are ensured a responsible caring environment for their lifetime, and when all animals are respected and protected.

Come Meet our Pets:

The best way to get to know our animals is to stop by the shelter and see us! We are located on Rt. 661-Rangtang Rd in Gloucester County.

Our hours: Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri, Sat - 11 AM to 4 PM. and Sundays (for adoptions only) from 1 PM to 4 PM. Closed Wednesdays

Our Adoption Process:

Before any pet is released, the adoptive family is carefully screened to assure that a healthy, happy environment will be provided. In addition, each adoptive family receives information on responsible pet care prior to release of the animal.

Next, we review our adoption application. We then conduct a veterinary check and a landlord check (for those who rent). We reserve the right to conduct a house check.

The processing and approval or denial of the application takes 2-3 days.

Please call or visit us between 11 AM and 4 PM Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, or between 1 PM and 4 PM on Sundays if you have any questions. We are closed on Wednesdays.

Our Adopted Pets:

We have helped lots of pets connect with loving and caring owners. Check out our adopted pets list!

Why should you adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life! What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder? When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes. So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
