Dog adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog and you'll have a friend for life! Contact us, or contact another local humane society, animal shelter or SPCA.
In 2005, Mary and Steve Dolch joined SAMM to help save even more dogs. They have been an invaluable asset to the mission of SAMM by helping to foster and transport and by networking for even more adoptions.
SAMM dogs are all "highly adoptable." Which means they are, for the most part, small and/or purebreed dogs. These dogs are transported to areas where there is high demand. This is done in an effort to discourage those who cannot find these types of dogs at their local pounds and humane societies from going to "breeders" and "puppy mills."
Save A Mexican Mutt, or SAMM, was started in 2003 by Kelly and Jim Karger after they witnessed the needless suffering of homeless and neglected dogs on the streets of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Then they became aware that dogs and cats are euthanized by electrocution, drowning, poisoning, or shot in nearly all parts of Mexico.
In 2005, Mary and Steve Dolch of Albuquerque, New Mexico, joined SAMM to help save even more dogs. They have been an invaluable asset to the mission of SAMM by helping to foster and transport and by networking for even more adoptions.
SAMM dogs are "highly adoptable" dogs (excellent temperament, compact size and/or desirable breed, etc). These dogs are transported to areas where there is high demand. This is done in an effort to discourage people who cannot find these types of dogs at their local pounds and humane societies from going to "breeders" and "puppy mills."
Since its inception, more than 200 dogs have been transported to their forever homes in the United States. We work in conjunction with highly qualified and ethical "no-kill" rescue and adoption organizations in Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado as well as individual adoptions.
Prior to transport, all dogs are spayed or neutered, temperament tested, are current on their vaccinations, and arrive with a health certificate dated within three days of crossing the U.S. border.
SAMM has just received approval from the IRS as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Your donations are U.S. tax deductible and necessary to expand our efforts to help more dogs find their forever homes. To make a donation contact Kelly.
And, SAMM is always grateful for volunteers willing to provide transportation to the United States for adoptable dogs and puppies. If you are in San Miguel and plan to drive or fly (via American Airlines) to the U.S.A. and you would be interested in facilitating transportation (a portion of which may be tax deductible), please contact Kelly Karger at the email address shown below. Muchas gracias!
These dogs have had a rough life. So, it is necessary to make sure they will have a home and family they can forever call their own.
Your application will be thoroughly reviewed and you will have a telephone interview. In most cases, we will arrange a home visit. It is the goal of SAMM to ensure the animal you adopt fits your lifestyle and that of your family.
Why should you adopt?
Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life! What is the difference between adopting a dog or puppy versus getting dogs for sale or puppies for sale from a dog breeder? When someone is breeding puppies, they are creating new dogs who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog or puppy and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale from a puppy breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs who must find homes. So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog or adopt a puppy at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
