PAWS & More Animal Shelter primarily serves the City of Washington, Iowa, and the rural area surrounding it. PAWS & More is a 501c3 public non-profit organization. It is governed by a Board of Directors who have authority and financial responsibility. A full-time paid Shelter Director supervises other staff and is responsible for safe and efficient day-to-day operations. The remaining work is done by volunteers.

The shelter screens potential adopters carefully. The application procedure requires veterinarian references and/or home visits to ensure that the animals are going to good, loving, forever homes. All animals are spayed or neutered before they are adopted, if they are old enough to undergo the procedure. Adopters of younger animals are required to sign a contract agreeing to have the animal altered when it is of the proper age.

PAWS & More, also known as Washington County Humane Society, is a private, adoption-guarantee shelter located in Washington, Iowa. “PAWS” stands for “Providing Animals with Shelter”, while “More” stands for the loving care and treatment we give to every animal who passes through our doors. PAWS & More has been an organization since 1978. It serves as animal control for all of Washington County and most of its incorporated communities. PAWS & More provides humane care to all animals needing protection, seeks suitable homes for animals without owners, and provides euthanasia when only medically or behaviorally necessary. It also works in cooperation with other shelters and rescue organizations needing assistance when possible.
