Cities, Towns, and/or Counties We Serve:

PAWS & More Animal Shelter primarily serves the city of Washington, Iowa, and the rural area surrounding it. The shelter also frequently takes in stray and abandoned animals from the rest of Washington County and counties bordering it, including nearby communities such as Ainsworth, Crawfordsville, Kalona, Richland, Riverside, Wellman, and West Chester.

About Our Shelter:

The shelter was established as the Washington County Humane Society Animal Shelter in 1993 as a caring alternative to the local city dog pound. The shelter’s first home was a small building on the east side of Washington. In July of 1998, the shelter was moved to a much bigger building on the west side of town thanks to a generous donation from a local patron and matching funds raised by local Humane Society members and supporters. The name “PAWS & More” was chosen in 1999. PAWS & More Animal Shelter is a private, no-kill shelter located in Washington, Iowa. “PAWS” stands for “Providing Animals With Shelter,” while “More” stands for the loving care and treatment we give to every animal who passes through our doors.

Come Meet our Pets:

Join us the second Saturday of every month from 11am - 2pm at Petco at 1450 Twixt Town Road (across Collins Road from Lindale Mall) in Marion, IA.

Join us the first Saturday of every month from 11-2 at PetSmart Cedar Rapids (near Lindale/Bed Bath & Beyond) we'll bring some of our wonderful animals.

Our Adoption Process:

The shelter screens potential adopters carefully. A rigorous application procedure requires veterinarian references and/or home visits to ensure that the animals are going to good, loving, forever homes. All animals are spayed or neutered before they are adopted out, if they are old enough to undergo the procedure. Adopters of younger animals are required to sign a contract agreeing to have the animal altered when it is of the proper age.

We have helped lots of pets connect with loving and caring owners. Check out our adopted pets list!

Why should you adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life! What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder? When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes. So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
