National Mill Dog Rescue
About Our Rescue Group
The National Mill Dog Rescue (NMDR) exists for two sole purposes - to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home mill dogs and to educate the general public about the realities of the commercial dog breeding industry.
Fullfilling our mission: The dogs we acquire from commercial breeders are most often retired breeding stock that commonly suffer from serious health and behavioral issues. We also acquire young dogs or surplus puppies that are often hours away from being drowned or shot when they have been deemed useless to the mill for a variety of reasons.
Once acquired, we provide year-round shelter either in our own facilities or through our network of foster homes. Each dog receives veterinary care on a priority basis and is spayed or neutered prior to placement in a permanent home. Taking into consideration the condition of most rescued mill dogs, we provide rehabilitative services for as long as necessary, understanding that this can sometimes take years.
Adoptions take place through adoption fairs sponsored by local businesses, through our website or by word of mouth. Each adoption requires a home visit, references, and a contractual agreement regarding the care and commitment to the life of the dog. We provide special education regarding the typical challenges in adopting a mill dog and on-going support as needed. It is required that every dog adopted from NMDR, for the remainder of its life, be returned to MDRN if the adoptive family can no longer keep the dog for any reason.
The foremost goal of NMDR is to put an end to the pain and suffering of commercial breeding dogs living in misery all over the country. The vast majority of the animal-loving public is totally unaware of the conditions these dogs endure throughout their lives. NMDR has and will continue to utilize local and national media outlets to convey this information to the public. Additionally, it is NMDR’s goal to create pet care clinics that will teach the importance of spaying and neutering, proper pet selection, humane training methods, quality care and nutrition and stress the lifetime commitment to companion animals. It is the belief of the National Mill Dog Rescue that an informed public is the best way to bring about change on behalf of these animals

Adopting a retired mill dog can be a challenging experience. These dogs have had very little human contact and may take quite a bit of time adjusting to life as a "real" dog. Therefore, we consider each adoption a trial and never want an adoptive home to feel like they're stuck with a dog if there are problems. One thing that mill dogs need more than anything else is time. Barring any major problems, we ask that adopters give the dog a reasonable amount of time to adjust to its new home. Most of our dogs do remarkably well and bring lots of joy and a great sense of satisfaction to their new owners.
The adoption fee includes spay or neuter, all shots including Rabies, a basic dental if necessary. The fees are as follows:
6 months - 8 years old -200 8 years and up - $100 Puppies up to 6 months old - $250
We offer a full refund for 14 days after the adoption if the adoption doesn't work out. Once again, for the sake of the dog, we ask that adopters give the dog a reasonable amount of time and patience before deciding to return the dog. If the dog does need to be returned, it is the policy of NMDR that all dogs are returned to us and never surrendered to any other person or organization for any reason.
Dog adoption and cat
adoption saves lives. Adopt
a dog or adopt a cat and
you'll have a friend for life! What is the difference between adopting a dog
or puppy versus getting dogs for sale or puppies for sale from a dog breeder?
When someone is breeding puppies, they are creating new dogs who need homes.
Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog or puppy and they
think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale from
a puppy breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs who must find homes.
So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder, we encourage
people to adopt a dog or adopt a puppy at their local animal shelter, SPCA,
humane society or pet rescue group.
