About Our Shelter:

The Panhandle Animal Shelter is a 501 (3)c non-profit shelter which is not affiliated with the county or city and receives no tax support.

Of the 1500 cats and dogs admitted to the shelter each year, nearly all strays will be placed in adoptive homes and several hundred will be reunited with their owners.

The shelter's outreach programs provide humane education, spay/neuter cost assistance and free pet identification & registration.

We are located in Ponderay, Idaho near Sandpoint. We are open 7 days a week 12:00am - 5:30 pm Monday-Saturday,and 12-4:30 on Sunday. We do not open until 2pm on the first Thursday of every month to allow for staff training.

Our Adoption Process:

You must qualify to adopt one of our shelter pets, qualification process includes filling out a adoption application & being approved by the staff of the Panhandle Animal Shelter. We reserve the right to refuse the adoption of an animal to anyone we feel not adequate.
The standard K-9 adoption fee's are $85 for adult dogs and $95 for small dogs and puppies. We also have featued dogs availble for $35. Adult cats are $45 and kittens are $65. Featured cats are $10

Why should you adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life! What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder? When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes. So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
