We Serve the Following Cities, Towns, and/or Counties: We are the only no-kill animal shelter in St. Charles County, Missouri. We do NOT euthanize our animals to make room for new ones. We only euthanize an animal when the vet tells us it is the kindest thing to do for that animal or in the very rare case of extreme aggression. Founded in 1973, we have grown in leaps and bounds, adding new programs to benefit animals and educate the public about their care, animal safety, the importance of spaying and neutering and many other topics. We care for and provide homes for nearly 1,000 cats and dogs each year! When space allows, we travel to other shelters and bring back some of their pets whose time is nearly up and give them a second chance at life. The majority of our animals come from private citizens who are unable to keep their pets for one reason or another, and we love and care for them until we find another family for them to join. We also work with the Missouri Department of Agriculture and take some of the animals they rescue from bad situations such as hoarders or unlicensed breeding facilities. Most of the animals we accept are healthy, with only the expected worms or mild skin conditions which are treated and clear up rapidly, but we do take some animals in bad shape who require extensive medical treatment or need a foster home for a long recovery. These pets need our help the most but their care is expensive, even with local vets working with us to keep costs down. We rely on people like you to help us to provide are for these animals, whether by making monetary or in kind donations, volunteering or being a foster parent. The St. Charles Humane Society is a not-for-profit 501c3 organization and therefore we do NOT receive tax dollars—all of our funding comes from concerned citizens willing to open their hearts and wallets to our cause.

Our Adoption Process
All animals accepted by our shelter are evaluated by a licensed veterinarian to determine any medical needs. Before being made available to the public for adoption, every animal receives the following services: Medical treatment - if needed De-worming Age appropriate vaccinations Spay or neuter surgery Micro chipping for identification Cats are FIV and FLV tested Dogs are tested for heart worms Visitors may spend as much time as they wish looking over the animals. Shelter staff members can help you determine the best animal choice for your lifestyle, based on information you might wish to share about your home, lifestyle, family, other pets, etc. When you find an animal in which you are interested, a shelter staff person will assist you in getting to know the animal. You may spend time with the prospective pet in a private room. If the animal you are interested in is a dog, he may also be taken outside for a walk or some play time. Adoption Process - Adopting A Pet: After you have decided on a pet to adopt, you will need to complete an adoption interview. This takes approximately ten minutes. There is an adoption fee associated with all of our animals. We accept cash, check, MasterCard, Visa and American Express. The adoption fee assists in recovering the costs the humane society has incurred to give the pet the medical services, food and care received at our shelter. After Adoption: Although we believe all our animals to be healthy due to the superb quality veterinary care they receive at our facility and through local veterinarians, we strongly encourage you to take your new pet to a veterinarian for an examination upon adopting. Our Cooperating Veterinarians List consists of many area vets who will give you a free initial office visit for your new pet adopted from the Saint Charles Humane Society. Your adopted pet will also receive 30 days of complimentary pet health insurance! Please note that the vet visit must be used within 7 days of adoption and must be accompanied by the coupon voucher you receive when you adopt your pet.
