Greyhound Adoption of Ohio
About Our Shelter
We are Greyhound Adoption of Ohio. We retrieve retired and rejected racing greyhounds from tracks and farms around the country and find them appropriate, loving homes. Without the intervention of groups like ours, thousands more dogs would die, needlessly. It is still estimated that approximately 15,000 greyhounds are euthanized, annually, because they have no place to go, when they're not profitable. We know we can't help them all, but, since our inception, in 1993, we have found homes for nearly 2000 greyhounds, placing approximately 200 dogs a year. In special situations, we also rescue non-greyhounds. When Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, GAO went to Mississippi and retrieved 48 dogs, none of which were greyhounds, and brought them back to Ohio for permanent placement. Seven of the dogs were returned to their owners.
Come Meet our Pets
Most visits are at the kennel, although we attend numerous events at a number of different venues in the state. Some of these include pet supply stores, fairs, festivals and trade shows. Many events are monthly and some, like The Cleveland Home and Garden Show, are annual events. GAO also hosts the largest event in the state, where people can bring their dogs to participate in fun activities and events. Approximately 7000 people and 2000 dogs attend, each August. Each year, about 25 rescue groups and shelters participate, with booths at the event. GAO does not charge for this. All materials, promotion, etc is at no cost to the shelters and rescues.
Our Adoption Process
We require potential adopters to fill out an application, followed by an personal interview at the kennel, veterinary references (if they have pets), home visit, when necessary, evaluation and, if accepted, we match the adopter with the most appropriate pets to choose from. The adoption contract has numerous requirements, including returning the pet to GAO, if the adopter should ever not want the pet, maintaining appropriate ID on the dog at all times, in addition to their GAO ID, providing appropriate medial care, including vaccinations and Heartworm preventative, etc. Prior to adoption, all dogs are altered, vaccinated, have complete dentals, dewrmed and microchipped. Any other medical care the pet might need is provided prior to adoption. Our adoption fee is $175

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life! What is the difference between adopting a dog or puppy versus getting dogs for sale or puppies for sale from a dog breeder? When someone is breeding puppies, they are creating new dogs who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog or puppy and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale from a puppy breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs who must find homes. So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog or adopt a puppy at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
