Our Adoption Process:

Welcome to the Harnett County Animal Control Adoption page. Our department would like to thank you for your interest in a new pet. Remember that when you adopt an animal, you are the one responsible for the care and behavior of that animal. Your family and home need to be prepared for the new member to make it a safe and happy transition.

Our adoption fee is $20.00, and a rabies vaccination must be paid for at any licensed veterinary or animal hospital before the animal is released to go to a new home. Unlike some counties, Harnett County does not require that our adoptable animals be spayed or neutered. However, we STRONGLY URGE that the new owner consider the surgery.

Our shelter attendants can help direct you to a promising new pet suitable for your family and home environment. Since many of our animals are brought in or picked up as strays, we do not know their medical history. Therefore, we cannot and do not guarantee their health. We strongly encourage you to take your new pet to a veterinarian as soon as possible, whether it is an adult dog or cat, puppy, or kitten. We also reserve the right to deem an animal unadoptable due to certain reasons of surrender by the animal's owner, or by our own experiences with the animal.

All adoptions are done on a first come, first serve basis. If you have picked an animal from our shelter and leave to get the required rabies vaccine paperwork, the animal will be on hold. If space allows, we may hold an animal until the proper arrangements are made.

Remember that the shelter has a steady flow of incoming animals that would make great pets!
