Cities, Towns, and/or Counties We Serve:

We serve all of Koochiching county. We will adopt out to other counties but the potential adopter is responsible for all transportation.

Mission Statement:
The Borderland Humane Society provides safe shelter for companion animals in transition, promotes responsible pet ownership and improves the quality of life for animals and people.

About Our Shelter:

The Borderland Humane Society is a non-profit organization that runs from a shelter (holding facility) and a few foster homes. Our mission is to promote value & respect for animal life by connecting people & pets through education & technology.

The BHS took over the City Pound July 1, 2009. We have a very high adoption rate, almost 100% for dogs (a couple were very ill and passed over the Rainbow Bridge) and approximately 96% for cats (Rainbox Bridge also).

We focus on promoting spaying and neutering in the community by offering $50 vouchers to assist with the costs. Another focus is pet owner responsibility - we promote this by going out in to the coummity and speaking to service groups and educating school aged children in the class rooms.

Our holding facility hours are: Tuesday-Friday 3pm-7pm and Saturday 8am-noon.

Come Meet our Pets:

We are located in International Falls, Minnesota. If you are interested in a certain pet, please call the BHS and one of our Animal Care Attendants will call you and answer any questions you may have about the animals in the shelter or connect you with the foster family.

Our Adoption Process:

We require a pre-adoption questionnarie application to be filled out prior to adoption and references will be checked. A background check may be done but will be at the discretion of the foster family only. Our adoption fee is $60 for cats and $75 for dogs.

All of our animals that are old enough will be spayed or neutered before adoption, but if they are under age, we will issue a voucher of $50 towards the cost of the procedure provided the vet you chose will honor the voucher.

Our Adopted Pets:

We have helped lots of pets connect with loving and caring owners. Check out our adopted pets list!

Why should you adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life! What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder? When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes. So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
