We Serve the Following Cities, Towns, and/or Counties: We are a nationwide organization of volunteers. The mission of Basenji Rescue & Transport, Inc. is to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home dogs of the basenji breed. BRAT is an all-volunteer organization and has been recognized by the IRS as a tax-exempt charitable corporation since its founding in 1999. BRAT rescues basenjis from shelters, abusive situations, and relinquishing owners. We provide routine and advanced veterinary care for our dogs and insure that they have been spayed/neutered and appropriately immunized before placement.
Basenji Rescue & Transport (BRAT)
About Our Rescue Group
Our 800-plus volunteers foster basenjis in need, evaluate dogs for temperament, obtain necessary training and rehabilitation, and work to place each dog in the best possible home. We also help transport dogs to foster and forever homes, notify responsible breeders when their dogs come into rescue, provide post-adoption counseling to adopters, educate shelters and other rescue organizations about the basenji breed, and assist owners in dealing with basenji behavioral issues in order to prevent dogs from needing to be rescued. Although BRAT's primary mission is the rescue of purebred basenjis, we also notify prospective adopters of basenji mixes who need re-homing.
Come Meet our Pets
We are a nationwide organization with Basenjis in foster care throughout the United States.
Our Adoption Process
Applicants must fill out a comprehensive adoption form on our website. A Vet check and Home Visit is required. Dogs are posted on our site with details and applicants may apply for any dog that that feel would be a good match for them. Each Basenji has a coordinator who works with adopters to find the very best match.
Available dogs are current on all shots, spayed and neutered and in good health prior to placement.
Dog adoption and cat
adoption saves lives. Adopt
a dog or adopt a cat and
you'll have a friend for life! What is the difference between adopting a dog
or puppy versus getting dogs for sale or puppies for sale from a dog breeder?
When someone is breeding puppies, they are creating new dogs who need homes.
Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog or puppy and they
think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale from
a puppy breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs who must find homes.
So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder, we encourage
people to adopt a dog or adopt a puppy at their local animal shelter, SPCA,
humane society or pet rescue group.
