Cities, Towns, and/or Counties We Serve:

Based out of Edmonton, Alberta, we assist small breed dogs find their Furever Families. We focus on the high-kill area of Central Valley, California, as well as assist local families here in Edmonton to rehome their pets.

About Our Rescue Group:

What do we do:
Give dogs a chance. A chance for a home; a family; to be spoiled; to be loved. CaliCan Rescue Foundation is run by dedicated volunteers between California and Alberta, Canada. We’re all working for the same team – The Dogs. All adoption fees go towards all necessary medical costs, flights, and future rescues.

Why California? In many places throughout Canada, it can be quite difficult to find a “small-breed dog” without going to your local pet store or backyard breeder. Not all breeders are bad. CaliCan hopes that by flying pups in from California (which is filled with small breeds), we are helping put a dent on the puppy mill problem Canada has.

Why local too? Life happens. You may have gotten your little dog with the best of intentions of spending every non-working moment with them...but a new job with more hours, or loss of a job, or any number of other reasons is preventing you from giving them the time and attention they deserve. When you make the most difficult decision of allowing your pup to find a new family to love him/her, we will do our best to try to help you.

We do what we do because we love dogs - and we appreciate the completeness they bring to all our lives!

Our Adoption Process:

Every dog deserves the best! That's why we operate solely on a "Best Fit" basis, making sure that the pup and their potential family will match what each other is looking for!

We are thorough in our processes - instead of an online application, we prefer to chat with you and run through all our questions to get to know you and your family. This is to ensure that we keep our Best Fit practice running strong, to protect these little dogs and the families who contact us.

We DO NOT have the ability to do meet-n-greets with our pups (unless we have a special adoption event scheduled), but instead offer a 7-Day Trial Visit to the family who we feel is the Best Fit.

At the start of the 7-Day-Trial-Visit, we conduct a home visit as well to further ensure the pup is safe and secure. We collect 50% of the adoption fees at the start of the visit, and if things work out, we collect the rest at the end.

When you sign the adoption contract with us, you will receive your pup's medical records which will have their entire history from the moment they entered our rescue.

Why should you adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life! What is the difference between adopting a dog or puppy versus getting dogs for sale or puppies for sale from a dog breeder? When someone is breeding puppies, they are creating new dogs who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog or puppy and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale from a puppy breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs who must find homes. So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog or adopt a puppy at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
