About Our Shelter:

Apple Wood Rescue, Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit, public charity that will accept Chinchillas, Rats, Hamsters, Mice, Gerbils, Sugar Gliders, Hedgehogs and Degus in the Denver metro area.

We were founded on April 24, 2009 by Jinna Adamson and are located in the heart of Denver, Colorado at 2186 S Holly St, Ste 11, Denver, CO 80222. An article published in the Spring 2011 editions of the Mayfair Neighbors Inc. and Glendale Cherry Creek Chronicle details how and why Jinna decided to dedicate her life to these small and often forgotten animals.

Our Mission at Apple Wood is to provide rehabilitation, shelter, and proper care to all small exotic mammals in need, while also focusing on their mental health to help ensure rehoming success. We are a no kill sanctuary.

As of December 2012, we have placed 74 small animals into their fur-ever homes with 32 of those placements happening within the last year. We are growing very fast and are constantly on the look out for a bigger, more suitable shelter space so that we can expand and help more animals.

Come Meet our Pets:

Please note that the Executive Director and main contact for the shelter is employed elsewhere during the day and may be unavailable to answer your call. Voice mails and emails will be returned with in 24-48 hours. Appointments are currently during the evening or on weekends. Thank you.

Our Adoption Process:

Have you found an adorable small exotic mammal on our Animals page that you are considering bringing into your home? If so, please look over the Pre-Adoption Care Forms on our website for the species you are interested in as this will be required for the adoption. Then contact us by phone or email to set up an appointment. There will be a short amount of paperwork to transfer legal guardianship of the animal over to the adopting party. The person signing on behalf of the animal must be 18 years or older. Please feel free to inquire on any animal in our facility or if you have any questions related to a specific species and their care.

Why should you adopt?

small animals can make wonderful pets, and rather than buying a small animal for sale or finding a small animal breeder, adopting a small animal from an animal shelter or rescue organization is the perfect way to add a small animal to your family. Keep in mind, there is a lot you will need to know when you provide a home for a small animal. You will need to learn what to feed them, how much exercise or attention your small animal needs, and many other important things about how to house and care for a small animal. There are different types of small animals including Chinchilla, Degu, Ferret, Gerbil, Guinea Pig, Hamster, Hedgehog, Mouse, Prairie Dog, Rat, Skunk, and Sugar Glider.
