About Our Rescue Group:

My name is Margie and I am the President of Starfish Animal Rescue. Starfish Animal Rescue is a licensed rescue; I have been transporting animals out of a high kill shelter in rural Southeast Kentucky for about 5 years. When I started driving transport for the shelter in Harlan, Kentucky; they had a 95% euthanasia rate of all dogs and puppies. I was able to find a group that was willing to drive hours into the mountains to perform low cost spay/neuter for county residents. The shelter we work with applied for and received funds for low cost spay/neuter as well. Through these efforts and through working with some great local rescues (and not so local rescues), we have been able to decrease the euthanasia rate to below 10% this year! We feel that targeting one area and focusing on that one area will create lasting change for that area. We became an animal rescue because we saw so many great animals that were being overlooked and wanted to help them. We are foster based only so please consider fostering for us - it truly does save lives.

Come Meet our Pets:

We are not a shelter. We are a group of pet lovers and advocates who are committed to targeted rescue. Starfish Animal Rescue is a licensed rescue that is run by an all volunteer staff.
Once we rescue a dog or cat, it is placed in one of our foster homes until we are able to find it a suitable home. We are happy to set up an appointment to meet our pets once we receive and review your completed application.

We do our best to process applications quickly but please understand that we are a foster based rescue and that our volunteers work jobs; many are full time. Sending in a completed application is the best way to facilitate this process. You can go on our website and download an application from our site or use this link:
Once your application is reviewed, we will put you in contact with the dog's foster home to set up a time to meet the pet of your choice!
Thank you for supporting our rescue and what we are trying to accomplish in southeastern Kentucky.

Our Adoption Process:

Our adoption fees range from $100 - $400 depending on age and breed. For cats/kittens this covers spay/neuter, microchip, dewormer, flea preventative, Felv/FIV test and all up to date age appropriate vaccinations. For dogs/puppies this covers spay/neuter, microchip, dewormers, flea and tick preventative, heartworm test (only over 6 months of age) and all up to date, age appropriate vaccinations. We require an adoption application and a home visit prior to adoption. You can start the adoption process by doing the application online at

Why should you adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life! What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder? When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes. So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
