Cities, Towns, and/or Counties We Serve:

Conour Animal Shelter is located in the southwest portion of the San Luis Valley in Monte Vista, Colorado. The shelter serves five municipalities and two counties including Monte Vista, Center, Saguache, Del Norte and South Fork as well as Rio Grande and Saguache Counties.

About Our Shelter:

The Upper Rio Grande Animal Society (URGAS) was established December 17, 2009 filing for Articles of Incorporation with the Colorado Secretary of State. The IRS 501(c)(3) status was approved March 15 2010. URGAS is governed by an elected Board of Directors with Board approved By-Laws. URGAS took over the operation of the Conour Animal Shelter January 1, 2010, and is licensed by the State of Colorado.

URGAS provides a safe environment for lost, abused, abandoned, injured, sick or unwanted dogs. URGAS believes every dog deserves to be treated with the respect, to be fed well and to be treated with love. URGAS has three full-time dedicated employees that have over 30 years experience in animal welfare to provide quality care to all the dogs. The shelter is accessible to the public and serves as a resource to the community. The shelter has two very dedicated and dependable volunteers who both clean and take care of the dogs and one transports dogs to other shelters and to PETCO in Colorado Springs for adoptions. They donate an average of 40 hours per week for the shelter. There are four to eight people serving as volunteers that come periodically to help.

URGAS took over the operation of the Conour Animal Shelter to improve the environment and lives of the dogs. The shelter facility is small and has the capacity to house 30 dogs. There are times when the shelter houses more dogs, but partners with other shelters to transport dogs to find homes.
There is always a need for volunteers. It is so rewarding to spend time walking or just sitting with the dogs. People are an important part to providing physical and mental stimulation for maintaining their behavioral health. It relieves boredom and stress and makes a major difference in a shelter dog’s daily life.

There are many ways to donate to the shelter: Monetary donations are always welcomed. The shelter is always in need of food, blankets, towels, treats, toys, collars and leashes. Also, cleaning supplies such as detergent, dish soap, and paper towels.

Our Adoption Process:

The adoption program connects homeless pets in the shelter’s care with adoptive loving permanent homes. All dogs are vaccinated, dewormed, and provided necessary veterinary care. The staff provides daily quality care including behavioral modification and grooming for each dog. The adopter is required to complete an Adoption Contract and agree to the terms as stated in the contract. The staff takes time to visit with adopters to make the best possible match for the right dog, but there are no guarantees. The dog may be returned within 14 days of the adoption date and a full refund is issued. The standard adoption fee is $125 for puppies and small dogs and $55-$100 for older and larger less adoptable dogs. Special discounts are given in considering the length of time the dog has been at the shelter, the age and size of the dog, and if a dog has a certain defect which makes it harder to adopt. There is a 5-day holding period before the dogs are available for adoption. The dogs are spayed/neutered and micro chipped prior to going home. The shelter provides an adoption packet to the new pet owner, which includes materials to help with the new transition, both for the pet owner and the dog.

Why should you adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life! What is the difference between adopting a dog or puppy versus getting dogs for sale or puppies for sale from a dog breeder? When someone is breeding puppies, they are creating new dogs who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog or puppy and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale from a puppy breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs who must find homes. So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog or adopt a puppy at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
