The shelter serves five municipalities and two counties including Monte Vista, Center, Saguache, Del Norte and South Fork as well as Rio Grande and Saguache Counties.
About Our Shelter:The Upper Rio Grande Animal Society (URGAS) was established December 17, 2009 filing for Articles of Incorporation with the Colorado Secretary of State. The IRS 501(c)(3) status was approved March 15 2010. URGAS is governed by an elected Board of Directors with Board approved By-Laws. URGAS took over the operation of the Conour Animal Shelter January 1, 2010, and is licensed by the State of Colorado.
URGAS provides a safe environment for lost, abused, abandoned, injured, sick or unwanted dogs. URGAS believes every dog deserves to be treated with the respect, to be fed well and to be treated with love. URGAS has three full-time dedicated employees that have over 30 years experience in animal welfare to provide quality care to all the dogs. The shelter is accessible to the public and serves as a resource to the community. The shelter has two very dedicated and dependable volunteers who both clean and take care of the dogs and one transports dogs to other shelters and to PETCO in Colorado Springs for adoptions. They donate an average of 40 hours per week for the shelter. There are four to eight people serving as volunteers that come periodically to help.
URGAS took over the operation of the Conour Animal Shelter to improve the environment and lives of the dogs. The shelter facility is small and has the capacity to house 30 dogs. There are times when the shelter houses more dogs, but partners with other shelters to transport dogs to find homes.
There is always a need for volunteers. It is so rewarding to spend time walking or just sitting with the dogs. People are an important part to providing physical and mental stimulation for maintaining their behavioral health. It relieves boredom and stress and makes a major difference in a shelter dog’s daily life.
