Cities, Towns, and/or Counties We Serve:

Free Flight has been located in San Diego County in Southern California for over 30 years.
We serve parrot owners, want-to-be parrot owners and people just wanting to learn more about exotic birds.

About Our Shelter:

We are a unique non profit parrot sanctuary allowing the public to interact with the parrots under our guidance - this helps us to socialize the birds which in turn helps them to transition toward being adopted. Free Flight focuses on the overall well-being of the parrots living within the sanctuary as well as becoming an educational resource center for our community-at-large, especially children. Not all of our parrots will be adoptable so they are able to live out their lives at Free Flight.

Our Adoption Process:

Our adoption process is:
1. Visit Free Flight and meet the birds. Ask for our list of available parrots.
2. If you find one that is adoptable and feel you & your household are a compatible match, start a conversation with a staff member.
3. Plan to visit the bird many times to be sure it is a good match for both of you; you will want to bring other family members to meet the bird as well; continue the conversation with a staff member (ex., your lifestyle, experience with parrots, housing).
4. Once you are ready to adopt you will work with a staff member to gain executive director approval, discuss adoption fee ($100 to $800, depending on the bird) and timing.
5. When adoption is approved we will provide you with a written contract, collect adoption fee, provide you with written parrot care information and you will be able to take your adopted bird home.

Why should you adopt?

birds can make wonderful pets, and rather than buying a bird for sale or finding a bird breeder, adopting a bird from an animal shelter or rescue organization is the perfect way to add a bird to your family. Keep in mind, there is a lot you will need to know when you provide a home for a bird. You will need to learn what to feed them, how much exercise or attention your bird needs, and many other important things about how to house and care for a bird. There are different types of birds including African Grey, Amazon, Brotogeris, Budgie, Button Quail, Caique, Canary, Chicken, Cockatiel, Cockatoo, Conure, Dove, Duck, Eclectus, Emu, Finch, Goose, Guinea Fowl, Kakariki, Lorikeet, Lovebird, Macaw, Mynah, Ostrich, Parakeet - Other, Parakeet - Quaker, Parrotlet, Parrot - Other, Peacock, Pheasant, Pigeon, Pionus, Poicephalus (including Senegal and Meyer's), Quail, Rhea, Ringneck, Rosella, Softbill - Other, Swan, Toucan, and Turkey.
