The Michigan Humane Society serves the entire Metropolitan Detroit area. We have 3 animal care centers in Wayne and Oakland counties all of which offer full-service adoptions and veterinary care. We also have offsite adoption locations in PetSmart stores. Our adoption program is supported by providing individualized treatment and care to hundreds of animals

About Our Shelter:

The Michigan Humane Society is the oldest and largest animal welfare organization in Michigan, taking in approximately 35,000 animals per year. We have three animal care centers in the Metro area including locations in Detroit, Westland and Rochester Hills, as well as a cat adoption centers in the PetSmart stores in Dearborn, Roseville, Rochester Hills and Taylor. You are sure to find the perfect pet at one of our adoption locations!

Come Meet our Pets:

Ours adoptable pets are available 7 days a week at the PetSmart store from 9 to 9, or 9 to 6 on Sundays! Michigan Humane Society volunteers are at the cat center on Saturdays from 11 to 5 and on Sundays from 11 to 4, to assist you with finding the perfect new pet. PetSmart staff can assist you the rest of the week with adopting a cat. Your new pet can generally go home with you the very same day!

Our Adoption Process:

We have a simple adoption application and approval process. Our adoption fees vary by animal, but generally include neutering, age appropriate vaccinations, behavior and health assessments, and health insurance. In addition, all adopters have free access to our Adopter Support program for assistance with health or behavior issues that may arise.

Why should you adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life! What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder? When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes. So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
