Paws and Think Detroit's adoption process

Additional adoption info

Paws and Think Detroit reserves the right to refuse placement of any dog for any reason. The well-being and safety of the dog comes first. Paws and Think Detroit requires that all dogs adopted from our organization be family members and thus dwell inside the home.

We adopt out only in the Metro Detroit area.

After a completed application, we will do a phone screen, house visit, vet, and reference check. We want to ensure the perfect match is made!

All dogs are fully vaccinated, heart worm checked (will only be adopted out if they are heart worm negative), fecal tested, prior to being adopted out and fixed if over the age of 6 months; If under the age of 6 months, we require the adopter to spay/neuter the dog by 6 months per our adoption contract. They are also in foster care not in a kennel and start the training process of potty training, house rules, walking on a leash properly, etc.

Adoption Fees vary depending on age and breed however, generally they do stay within these classifications with the few exceptions which would be noted on the dogs profile:

Puppies (up to 12 months) are $300

1 year to 6 years is $250

7 to 9 years is $200

Senior Dogs (over 9 years): $100 - $150 based on age and health

Bonded Pairs: $300-400

If you are interested in meeting any of the available dogs, or becoming a foster, please email us a completed application and we will call to set up an appointment to do a meet and greet.

About Paws and Think Detroit

Paws and Think Detroit is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to bringing awareness of how to respond when a dog is abandoned, finding and facilitating foster homes for less fortunate dogs, and educating the community on the importance of saving a dog’s life and the impact it can have on both the dog and the adopter. We believe that the act of “rescuing” a dog is not only life-changing for the dog, but for the rescuer as well. As such, we are committed to dispelling the myths about abandoned or rescued dogs, fears about certain dog breeds and the overall perception of dog adoption.

Paws and Think Detroit is a small Detroit-based rescue and awareness group founded by a couple of avid dog lovers despite working their 9-5 jobs, who have personally rescued dogs in need throughout their lives. After observing a number of unwanted dogs being dumped in our own neighborhood of Palmer Park, we finally chose to take a stand. Every day, dogs are dumped, chained up in the backyard regardless of weather, unfairly judged based on their breed, or dismissed, as being too “dangerous” around kids and others; and with shelters being at capacity the unfortunate reality for most of these dogs is euthanasia. People call us those dog crazy people, and we have officially accepted that title. Please continue to follow and support this organizations journey to find others who share our passion for dogs and want to take the stand with us.

Adopt a Pet is the easiest way for you to search for a new pet in Detroit, MI.

Support adoption and rescue. Why go to a dog breeder, cat breeder or pet store to buy a dog or buy a cat when you can adopt?

Why should you adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
