About Columbia Second Chance
Second Chance Makes Families
Second Chance was founded in 1985 as a privately-funded, all-volunteer organization dedicated to rehoming unwanted animals. Some of our animals come to us as strays or from local shelters, while others are given up by families who have to make the tough decision to find a new home for their animal. Through the kindness of our volunteers and our foster homes, we care for dogs and cats while we search for their new forever home. At no time are animals euthanized just because they don’t have a home. Our animals patiently wait to find just the right person or people to complete their family. Second Chance follows best-practice recommendations in order to provide our animals with the best quality medical care, food, socialization, and training available. Our volunteers and donors ensure that we can continually strive to increase the number of animals we care for each year.
For 32 years, Second Chance helped the homeless pets of Columbia in several locations throughout Boone County. In 2010, we moved into a modern building of 6,000 square feet on over 30 acres of scenic views, just off of I-70. This location allows Second Chance to house some adoptable cats in our spacious Kitty Kondos. All dogs, kittens, and any animals requiring extra medical care or socialization are still housed in our dedicated foster homes throughout the local area.
As we look toward the future of animal rescue, we hope to be able to increase the number of animals and community members help each year. You can help us achieve this goal by donating, volunteering, adopting, and educating. Contact us to find out more about us!

Support adoption and rescue. Why go to a dog breeder, cat breeder or pet store to buy a dog or buy a cat when you can adopt?
Why should you adopt?
Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life.
What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?
When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.
So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
