Animal Advocate, Psychologist, Adopt-a-Pet.com
Dr.
Pia Salk is an animal advocate and spokesperson for Adopt-a-Pet.com,
North America's largest non-profit pet adoption website. As a contributing
writer on Adopt-a-Pet.com and
host of "The Save-a-Pet Show," Pia emphasizes that adopting
not only saves lives, but is good parenting and promotes pro-social behavior
in today's youth.
An expert on the human-animal bond, Dr. Salk's media interviews include
regular appearances on The Martha Stewart Show. Also a regular
contributor to Martha Stewart's blog, "The
Daily Wag," she addresses topics ranging from the loss of a companion
animal to the importance of animal welfare in the context of social justice overall.
Dr. Salk's work includes consulting for municipalities on humane education
campaigns and co-authoring humane legislation. Pia's extensive
involvement in animal rescue efforts has been featured on such shows as Animal
Planet's Hurricane Heroes and 20/20.
In her role as a psychologist, Dr. Salk has developed
programs that pair at-risk teens with animals who share similar histories of abuse
and neglect. Pia brings her own rescued animals into her work, often
crediting them as being "the real therapists."
According to a colleague, "Pia may be little in stature, but she is big
on personality. The kids she works with love her ability to roll around and
get dirty, both physically and emotionally. She has a knack for relating to both
animals and humans!"
Pia is the niece of Dr. Jonas Salk, inventor of the polio vaccine. She and her husband
live in New York with their family of adopted companion animals.
