My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Dupree has a "joie de vivre" attitude. Although he has lived in a kennel for a long time, he makes the best of his situation. He makes us laugh with his need to sit on every different chair in one of the outside runs. I guess he needs to see a different perspective on life while he is here. I even found him sitting high on a large rock in our back yard run. Just sitting there over looking his kingdom. The kennel is next door to DPW and every employee of the facility knows Dupree by name. As they drive or walk by the run you hear them call out “Dupreeeeee” reminiscent to a character from Cheers.

Dupree is strong and in his past, he once thought he had to use his voice and body to get attention. He is now learning that he gets all his wants and needs fulfilled by offering appropriate behavior. He sits for all treats, toys, attention, doors to open, harnesses to be fitted, etc. The volunteers love working with him because he is so fun to train: sit-stays, waits, leave-it, down and crate training are some of his specialties. Sometimes we forget he is still in a crate but his snore alerts us to let him out.

Dupree would be a great pet for a person who is willing to continue with his training protocol. Although he will play in the yard with some of the other dogs and frequently goes on buddy walks, he should be an only dog. Due to his size and strength, he would be best in a home with older children.

Dupree’s favorite past time is when one of the staff or volunteers takes him into the office so he can lay at their feet while they finish their work. I think it is the closest he has to being in a home.
