My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I'm trying to find a home for Buster; he's a smart, affectionate, really beautiful, 10-month old German Shepherd/Husky mix who is in desperate need of a good home. I’ve tried to help rescue him/foster him over the past few weeks after seeing that my neighbors were unable to care for him (he was relegated to the backyard without shelter at a young age, and when he began to jump the fence, he was tied up 24 hours a day for a month until we took him in--while tied up, he seemed to often go without water and had no stimulation at all). However, it’s turning out that while he’s a great dog, I absolutely cannot keep him with my cats. A friend is currently fostering my cats while I foster Buster. I have no experience with dogs of this size, but I'm walking him every night and, with the help of more experienced friends, I am working on obedience with him, including crate-training him.

Just a little bit about Buster: he’s housebroken, travels well in the car, and is able to sit and lie down on command. He's also currently learning to enter his kennel on command. Buster seems to be a surprisingly calm dog for his breed and size, but he definitely needs lots of exercise. He is incredibly friendly with all humans, and while I’ve never seen him interact extensively with children, he is happy to have them approach to pet him while shopping at Petsmart and the Tractor Supply Store.

Age: ~10 months
Gender: Male
Mix: German Shepherd/Husky mix
Houstrained: Yes
Crate-trained: No, but working on it
Heartworm: Negative
Neutered: Yes
Micro-chipped: Yes
Good with other dogs: seems fine with large dogs
With cats: NOT good with cats
With children: seems good with children, but I have not observed him interact extensively with children and I would not yet trust him alone with a small child, as he gets playful and mouthy and is unaware of his size.

I don’t want to advertise Buster as the “perfect” dog—to be sure, he’s a big puppy still and I try to keep him surrounded with plush dog toys rather than pillows and blankets; he’s also able to jump a short chain-link fence and he needs someone who can put him in his place when starts to play tug-of-war with his leash—but he’s definitely on his way to being the perfect dog!

As to other animals, Buster seems fine with larger dogs, he’s becoming increasingly tolerant of small dogs, but so far he's not at all good with cats.

Vet Stats: Buster has had all of his puppy shots (including rabies) and is neutered and microchipped. He has also tested negative for heartworms and has one month of heartworm preventative and flea/tick preventative under his belt.
