My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Mango is a 27 year old Congo African Grey parrot. When Mango came to us, it was discovered through our normal vetting process that she does have heart disease, so she is a special needs little girl. However, it doesn’t stop her! She is a fabulous eater, she LOVES chop, a specially made (all healthy) bird bread is a second favorite, and she also east pellets quite well. In fact, she will eat just about anything you offer her (she does not get offered peanuts, seeds or items too high in protein per our vet). Her favorite food is almonds, but she will also specifically ask for apples, strawberries, and cookies (the cookies she gets are a cookie treat just for birds – all healthy). Her adopter will need to agree to offer her this special diet and will be given plenty of instruction on how to do so! She will also need to be seen by an avian veterinarian twice per year for well visits and will need to receive blood work and x-rays once a year to monitor her condition – but she is worth it, she is a wonderful little girl! She is a very active and loves to walk around on the floor and get into trouble! She does fine in households with other birds, but actual physical contact with other birds is not recommended as she is a bit protective of her cage and of her chosen person. While Mango will pick a favorite person in the home, she will step up for most people – although she prefers women and older female children. She does not like younger children or children who are too active, she definitely does not like children near her cage – so please be aware of that - it is recommended she go to a home with no children or with older children who know how to behave around parrots. Mango also needs to have her wings left unclipped (per our vet) this is so she can exercise fully which will help with her heart condition and overall health. Mango is also very vocal and makes all kinds of sounds and imitations – we have recently been working on the Star Wars theme – she almost has it! She will also tell you “Jesus loves you” and is beginning to learn the names of all of the birds in her foster home – she has a very clean vocabulary, no naughty words here! She loves her toys and especially loves shredding and destroying wood, so she has to have a variety of toys available to her at all times. She loves to hang out on her play stand near you while you are on the computer or watching TV – she is not a needy or cuddly bird, but just wants to be around you and where the action is so she can watch everything that is going on. We are still working on taking her outside for an appropriate amount of sunlight as well as on bathing – she was not used to either prior to coming to rescue and they both frighten her, so this is something we will continue to work on with her. Despite her medical issues as described, she really is a pretty easy bird to care for, quite pleasant to have around, and she is beautiful to boot! So if you are looking for an African Grey to bring into your family, and you will be able to provide the specialized diet and vet care as described (this will be part of her adoption contract), please consider Mango, you won’t be sorry!
