My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Jackson is a lovable fellow who can't seem to get enough playtime. This delightfully charismatic, one and a half year old pup has been charming our socks off since he came to us last month from an overcrowded high kill Animal Control facility.

Jackson was not always such a happy camper! He was not cut out for the frantic and frightening shelter life. He was terrified as the AC officers restrained him and then transported him to the harsh cement cage where he was to spend the next few weeks. He did not make too many friends, particularly with the Vet staff, and reports were that he put up a fuss as he was poked and prodded against his will.

We figured that Jackson needed some quiet time and TLC to relax and blossom, so we invited him to join our rescue. Besides, he is a comical mix of two of our favorite breeds: Beagle and Dachshund. And we could not wait to meet this double dose of Hound!

Some of our recent mixed breed rescues have sported some fabulous looks, and Jackson, too, has a unique appearance. He has a short, fawn colored brown coat, tinged with subtle black markings and large expressive brown eyes. He is unmistakably Dachshund, as we see the characteristic elongated spine, short legs, and paddle feet. His Beagle genes have strengthened his structure, adding height and proportion to his skeleton, drastically reducing the risk of the back problems that plague pure bred Dachshunds.

Jackson began to blossom immediately, as he settled in and interacted with other dogs. His puppyness returned full throttle, and his happy play mojo went into overdrive. Jackson would be a good choice for that active single or couple whose schedule allows time for puppy training. Although Jackson is just over a year old, he is behind the learning curve for a dog his age, so adopters will want to start immediately with obedience and leadership work.

Jackson could easily join a multi-dog family, but cats are a dicey bet. He is a high energy dog who would likely chase them beyond their comfort level. Jackson needs a fair amount of exercise and playtime each day. He would do well in an active family, with older kids who have time to devote to his training needs. Jackson would hold up to raucous kid play, and this type of action would go a long way in tiring him out.

Jackson has begun to respond beautifully to the basics of the Canine Good Citizenship program, and has shown us that he is eager to please, perceptive and a quick learner. As a scent hound, Jackson can become distracted by the intriguing smells of nature, and has been known to approach rapture while the breakfast bacon is sizzling. It can be a challenge to keep a scent hound focused on the business at hand, but Jackson is very treat motivated, and finds the training regimen fun.

Jackson is in excellent health and is recently neutered. While he has been successfully crate trained, adopters should expect a couple of marking incidents, as he gets used to his new routine. He has been vaccinated for rabies, parvo, distemper and bordatella. He has been microchipped and de-wormed and has tested negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis.
