Morty's Story...
Morty is a dog of simple needs – give him a steady supply of kibble and a big bowl of water, a squeaky toy to eviscerate, and a home with no other dogs or cats to distract attention from him… and he’s happy.

Having mastered sit, down, leave it, touch and target, Morty is now working on drop it, identifying his toys by name and some agility tricks, like going all the way through a tunnel (not stopping at the end to pose for photos!). He enjoys learning new skills and is very food motivated, so training him is easy. He's generally up for a game or a learning session if that's what you're into. His enthusiasm is infectious – just watch him galumph in the video!

Morty had a rough childhood. We believe he was confined to a backyard with no opportunity to play with other dogs, so he never learned to interact with them politely. That early experience could be why he’s a bit reserved when he first meets people, but he warms up quickly. Once he knows you, he is not at all reserved about his emotions. Just imagine coming home to a "thank goodness you’re back!” full body wiggle! Morty enjoys being petted and scratched. His favorite spot to lie down is wherever you are, and he’s happy to curl up at the foot of the bed.

Because adoption shows are too stressful, Morty prefers to meet his new family individually, so let us know you’re interested in him, and we’ll arrange a meeting!

About SPCA/Humane Society Of Prince George's County Maryland

About Our Rescue Group...

The PGSPCA is a nonprofit organization of volunteers dedicated to animal welfare. We are chartered by the State of Maryland, but we receive no state or county funds. Our activities are supported solely by contributions, dues and fundraising events.

We have three main objectives:

• To reduce the number of unwanted litters of dogs and cats through our progressive spay/neuter program – We have altered more than 20,000 animals over the past five years, many of them at no charge;

• To prevent cruelty to animals and all animal suffering through humane education, neglect and cruelty investigations, protective legal action, and an active dog and cat adoption program – We receive about 1,000 calls a month for cruelty investigations, spay and neuter assistance and adoption requests;

• To protect all animals against suffering and abuse through education on legislation affecting the protection of all animals – We regularly educate the public and provide testimony about animal welfare to county and state legislators.

Come Meet Our Pets...

We don't have a central shelter facility, so the best place to meet our adoptable cats and dogs is at our adoption shows! If you have previously filled out an application, please bring it with you to the show! Please e-mail with any questions. We cannot guarantee that an animal you want to meet will be at the show. Please check the animal's online listing the day before the show and we will do our best to let you know if he/she will be there!

We hold three adoption events each month, on Saturdays from 12 noon to 2 pm.

Our Adoption Process...

All of our adoptions begin with a visit to one of our adoption events. The adoption coordinator and/or the pet's foster parent will review the applications received. The applicant (if any) whose responses best fit the needs of the particular pet will generally be contacted within a week to schedule a home visit. A vet check and personal reference is also required prior to visiting your home. Our non-refundable adoption fee is $180 for dogs and $75 for cats. The fee covers spay/neuter, core vaccines (distemper and rabies), deworming, microchipping, and the general care of the animals. Per our contract, if you cannot keep your adopted pet for any reason, it must be returned to our program. We will try to find it a new home.
