Morty's Story...
Who knows how long Morty had been living his life at the end of a chain. We do know he never learned to socialize with other dogs, so he was probably taken away from his mama and siblings far too early. And that he ended up with someone who thought that the only things dogs need are food and water. Somehow, Morty survived on the hope that those brief moments of human contact, when his owner came and brought him his food, would morph into something longer. A bright boy, Morty worked up an array of tricks to try to keep his human engaged. While his former owner was immune to all his cuteness, we sure aren't!

We've quickly discovered that despite his early experiences, Morty loves being with people. He's very smart and enjoys training. He learned his basic commands and moved on to agility exercises and the adorable (but very un-PC) bang-you're-dead trick. He is house-broken and crate-trained; although he does not like to be in his crate when he knows we're in the house, he is content to lie in his crate when we go to work. He likes to snuggle with his foster mom when she's lying on the couch. Denied his childhood, Morty is reluctant to drop toys once he has them in his mouth, but he is easily distracted by treats (another thing he was denied most of his life); although we are working to eliminate this behavior, we would not place him with young children who do not understand his signals and might try to take something from him.

Morty would be perfectly happy at our house were it not for the two resident dogs. He is fearful of the dominant one and tries desperately to ignore the other. All he wants is a human for his very own. One who will help him make up for lost time, and one he can abandon himself to totally in adoring devotion. You and Morty, a mutually happy ending?

About SPCA/Humane Society Of Prince George's County Maryland

About Our Rescue Group...

The PGSPCA is a nonprofit organization of volunteers dedicated to animal welfare. We are chartered by the State of Maryland, but we receive no state or county funds. Our activities are supported solely by contributions, dues and fundraising events.

We have three main objectives:

• To reduce the number of unwanted litters of dogs and cats through our progressive spay/neuter program – We have altered more than 20,000 animals over the past five years, many of them at no charge;

• To prevent cruelty to animals and all animal suffering through humane education, neglect and cruelty investigations, protective legal action, and an active dog and cat adoption program – We receive about 1,000 calls a month for cruelty investigations, spay and neuter assistance and adoption requests;

• To protect all animals against suffering and abuse through education on legislation affecting the protection of all animals – We regularly educate the public and provide testimony about animal welfare to county and state legislators.

Come Meet Our Pets...

We don't have a central shelter facility, so the best place to meet our adoptable cats and dogs is at our adoption shows! If you have previously filled out an application, please bring it with you to the show! Please e-mail with any questions. We cannot guarantee that an animal you want to meet will be at the show. Please check the animal's online listing the day before the show and we will do our best to let you know if he/she will be there!

We hold three adoption events each month, on Saturdays from 12 noon to 2 pm.

Our Adoption Process...

All of our adoptions begin with a visit to one of our adoption events. The adoption coordinator and/or the pet's foster parent will review the applications received. The applicant (if any) whose responses best fit the needs of the particular pet will generally be contacted within a week to schedule a home visit. A vet check and personal reference is also required prior to visiting your home. Our non-refundable adoption fee is $180 for dogs and $75 for cats. The fee covers spay/neuter, core vaccines (distemper and rabies), deworming, microchipping, and the general care of the animals. Per our contract, if you cannot keep your adopted pet for any reason, it must be returned to our program. We will try to find it a new home.
