Morty’s fosterer writes...
Morty likes people. He likes people better than dogs, and would rather be the only four-legged member of the family. This sweet, soulful guy is happiest getting scratched – hard – along his spine, or just flopping down next to you. Morty came into our program after being taken away from his owner, who apparently had not provided appropriate care for him or let him play with other dogs. Although he enjoys being petted and curling up next to his foster mom on the couch, Morty does not seem to understand how to relate politely to other dogs. He will bark at them when they get too close, and shows no interest in interacting with the two dogs in his foster home.

Morty is smart. The only command he knew when he came into our foster program was sit. (He sat very well.) Now he also knows down, stay, wait, shake, touch, leave it, drop it… and he’s working on going through legs (the first move in the Arthur Murray School of Dog Dancing).

Morty likes peanut butter. He also loves to chase toys, especially squeaky toys. He cannot catch worth a darn. He doesn’t mind getting a bath, so he would probably be a great beach dog.

Morty is 7, but still has the enthusiasm of a puppy. At about 60 pounds, he’s too enthusiastic for young kids, but is fine with older ones. He’s neutered, chipped and up-to-date on everything he can be up-to-date on.

If you are interested in Morty, consider letting us know by filling out a (no obligation) adoption application (https://sites.google.com/pgspcavol/applications).
Morty IS expecting to attend the next adoption show, April 19th at the Annapolis PetCo, 12-2, although there's always a possibility that plans will need to change at the last minute. Plan on metting Morty outside, at the entrance to the store!

About SPCA/Humane Society Of Prince George's County Maryland

About Our Rescue Group...

The PGSPCA is a nonprofit organization of volunteers dedicated to animal welfare. We are chartered by the State of Maryland, but we receive no state or county funds. Our activities are supported solely by contributions, dues and fundraising events.

We have three main objectives:

• To reduce the number of unwanted litters of dogs and cats through our progressive spay/neuter program – We have altered more than 20,000 animals over the past five years, many of them at no charge;

• To prevent cruelty to animals and all animal suffering through humane education, neglect and cruelty investigations, protective legal action, and an active dog and cat adoption program – We receive about 1,000 calls a month for cruelty investigations, spay and neuter assistance and adoption requests;

• To protect all animals against suffering and abuse through education on legislation affecting the protection of all animals – We regularly educate the public and provide testimony about animal welfare to county and state legislators.

Come Meet Our Pets...

We don't have a central shelter facility, so the best place to meet our adoptable cats and dogs is at our adoption shows! If you have previously filled out an application, please bring it with you to the show! Please e-mail with any questions. We cannot guarantee that an animal you want to meet will be at the show. Please check the animal's online listing the day before the show and we will do our best to let you know if he/she will be there!

We hold three adoption events each month, on Saturdays from 12 noon to 2 pm.

Our Adoption Process...

All of our adoptions begin with a visit to one of our adoption events. The adoption coordinator and/or the pet's foster parent will review the applications received. The applicant (if any) whose responses best fit the needs of the particular pet will generally be contacted within a week to schedule a home visit. A vet check and personal reference is also required prior to visiting your home. Our non-refundable adoption fee is $180 for dogs and $75 for cats. The fee covers spay/neuter, core vaccines (distemper and rabies), deworming, microchipping, and the general care of the animals. Per our contract, if you cannot keep your adopted pet for any reason, it must be returned to our program. We will try to find it a new home.
