My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Teddy's adoption fee is $350.

Teddy is an approximate 5 year old, male Shih Tzu that weighs about 13 pounds. He is neutered, micro chipped and his shots are up to date. The beginning of Teddy’s life was spent in a puppy mill, and Teddy has an extreme fear of humans. It will take a while for him to warm up to the humans in his new forever home, and he will need to go to a home with lots of patience and that is committed to continuing to help Teddy adjust to his new life. After 7 months in his foster home, he will now take treats out of his foster dad’s hand. He has a “hiding spot” that he will go to when someone new comes into the house or if there is a lot of commotion that he is not comfortable with.

Teddy loves other dogs, so would be happiest in a home with another dog to provide companionship and help him continue to learn how to behave in the outside world. Once he is comfortable, you will meet a dog that desperately wants to be a puppy. He runs around the back yard chasing his own shadow, loves his stuffed animals and chewing on his stix. He will play tug of war and fetch with his toys (although he still needs work on the return). When you come home from being away for a few hours, you will see an excited, happy boy who is thrilled to see you. He loves to climb up on his human’s bed to receive lots of love and attention, and will come to you when he wants the attention. He enjoys lying on the couch beside his humans at night for his down time.

Teddy is crate trained, and will most likely need to be in the crate while his humans are away, until he has adjusted to the new house training rules. He will walk on a leash, but if something spooks him while walking, you have to squat down beside him to calm him down, and may have to pick him up to comfort him before proceeding on the walk. A well-fitted harness and a home with a securely fenced yard are absolute ‘musts’ for Teddy.

Teddy will be a wonderful pet for a family that can help him to come out of his shell of fear. He is a sweet dog, with a personality that is hidden under years of neglect. His sweet face and eyes still show the fear, but when Teddy trusts you, they also show a lot of love. He will do best in a home without children, or with older children who understand Teddy’s history and are also willing to work with him. There is nothing more rewarding than the first time Teddy lays down beside you and gives your hand a little lick.
