My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Missy Mona! This sweet, laid back girl came to WBCR with Molly when their elderly owner could no longer care for them. Adorable Mona has a full body wag, a grin a mile wide, a zest for life and a passion for playing – especially if the toy rolls! She LOVES tennis balls and her Kong, too, although Mona is also willing to mellow out and is overall a really well-mannered lassie. This 10 years old, purebred rough coat tricolor BC is going to make a wonderful canine companion to some lucky adopter.

Mona is a sunny, social, and outgoing girl. She enjoys meeting new people – when on walks her whole body “wags” in excitement when she sees the opportunity for a pet, and she greets visitors to the house with a smile. She has not lived with small children but met some middle school aged kids politely and sure enjoyed their attention! As with most Border Collies, Mona likes to keep track of where everyone in the house is and she loves being in the same room as the rest of her family. As she has become more comfortable in her foster home she has become more interested in the humans in the home and enjoys just napping near her humans. She does enjoy being brushed and petted but she does not demand it constantly; she is a laid back girl who makes really enjoyable company. She seems friendly with other dogs, can be kinda playful, and has spent the past 5 years living with another, younger BC (Molly). Although she will play some, she also has no problem letting her young playmate know when it’s time for rest. We think Mona and Molly will be happier placed separately and Mona could live with other dogs or be an only dog. She recently was “cat tested” and passed with flying colors, so we think she could live with a feline. Mona is really independent and very good at entertaining herself. She will push a tennis ball around the house with her nose. Although she is very content playing with her tennis ball alone, and loves to keep track of the whole “herd” of balls in her foster home by pushing all of them onto an area rug between playtimes (very cute!), she is absolutely thrilled if you’ll toss or kick the ball for her to fetch. After a fetch or two she’ll usually lay down for rest with playtime resuming when she is ready for more fun. Mona also likes settling down with a chew toy - treat filled Kongs and bones are her favorite! Mona loves outings and although she slows down a bit at the end of a 2 hour walk/hike, she will still keep going with a smile. Even though Mona is in her “senior” years she acts like a puppy during play time and it is evident that she wants the opportunity to explore the world in her new forever home. Mona is not a likely agility or dog sport candidate – she is instead a lower energy girl who will not need an excessive amount of exercise for her to be happy and at her best. Some fetch or a short walk and she is happy to chill out!

Mona is accustomed to being an inside dog and has good manners and skills in general. She is housetrained, cratetrained, walks nicely on a leash, and when she is not focused on play time Mona does well with basic commands like “sit”, “down” and “stay”. She is also very polite at meal times…she’ll let you know if she needs more water by standing near her bowl until her request is granted. In her foster home she does not have a fenced in yard for playtime so all time outside is on leash for walks and potty. Mona does very well off leash supervised in the unfenced backyard, when she start to sniff her way into the neighbor’s yard she comes quickly when her name is called. Mona does not seem to need much more in the manners department – although she is happy to learn new tricks, especially if treats are involved! She will, however, need adopters aware of a couple of habits she developed in her former home. One of these is spinning in a circle, barking, and grabbing her tail when excited or anxious by certain noises or movements – such as when a toilet is flushed or there is a knock at the door (even if it’s on TV) – not an uncommon sort of anxious behavior BCs can develop without enough stimulation or direction. Her fosters have been working on this with her and she hasn’t spun in a circle and bit her tail with a toilet flush in many weeks. Mona also did not have much experience riding in a car and was overstimulated when riding – barking at other cars and the windshield wipers - but she is making great progress on that front too, especially if she has a tennis ball to keep her busy! Other than these few triggers, Mona takes the world pretty well in stride, but she could certainly benefit from more exposure to all the world has to offer.

Mona seems to be in excellent health and was well cared for medically by her former owner. She does have a docked tail, although we are not sure why! With one ear up and one ear down, Mona is pretty cute, and she even cocks her head when you talk to her. Mona is carrying a few extra pounds, but she has already lost a few in her foster home and is sure to lose the rest with a conscientious adopter. It’s hard to tell her true size, though, since her coat is very thick and fluffy!

All in all, Mona is a very lovable, easygoing Border Collie who will make a perfect canine companion for someone looking for agreeable, mellower canine companionship. If you are looking for a laid back, patient, and forgiving girl, who is filled with character and has a sparkle in her eye – Mona may be the girl for you!

Mona is spayed, up to date on shots, and living in a loving foster home near Fort Collins, CO.
