My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

We are huge scent hound fans of late, and our Spot has stolen our collective hearts. Our be-speckled beauty has a sad, predictable tale to tell. A city stray, yet one more orphaned dog in need of a compassionate human hand to lead him to a better life.

Spot had a good run in the city shelter system. He made a lot of friends and impressed staff and volunteers with his general good nature. He received great behavior accolades, but it was noted that he was a little tense and nervous during various vet visits.

Spot seems to be a pretty friendly guy, but he also seems to prefer a quiet laid-back, adult household. We can tell that the craziness of foster care life, with new dogs coming and going, isn't the best fit for Spot. We can see him lolling by the fire, or in his favorite comfortable chair, with some soft mood music in the background, and perhaps a glass of Sauvignon Blanc for good measure!!!

All that is to say, Spot needs peace and quiet to be happy. We don't think he'd make a good family dog with lots of kids and extended family members visiting on a daily basis. He'd be an ideal companion for the active single or couple, who enjoy incorporating their dog into their lifestyle.

We believe Spot to be a mix of Bluetick Coonhound and Bluetick Beagle. He has the characteristic Bluetick black, brown and white coat with blackish blue ticking over most of his body. Spot has a medium build, and is stockier than most Coonhounds, at 45 pounds. His legs are somewhat shorter than a Coonhound, so we suspect a little bit of the noble Beagle DNA.

Spot is clearly a scent hound, and adopters should consider his gun dog roots as they formulate a plan for his happy, healthy lifestyle. Spot needs to keep his connection to the great outdoors. He loves his leash walks, and would be the ideal walking running or hiking companion. We would say that Spot is a medium energy dog, so he wouldn't be a candidate for a marathon run, but a good 2 or 3 mile jaunt every day would do him the world of good.

Spot has had no formal obedience training beyond what we've started in foster care. He's responding well to the basics of Canine Good Citizenship training, but will need adopters to continue him on a basic daily obedience regimen.

Spot likes other dogs and could easily join another multi-dog home with maybe one or two, calm well-trained dogs. He becomes overwhelmed in a large pack but does well with smaller numbers. We haven't had them around cats but he would likely chase them.

Spot is an adult dog at five years old, and is well past the puppy stage where computer cords and shoes seem desirable chew toys. He has good house manners and is crate trained. Adopters are expected to fine-tune the house training process because rescue dogs seem to lose some of their mojo as they move from place to place and interact in homes with other dogs. Patience is an adopter's best tool for achieving success with their new rescue dog.

Spot is in excellent health and has been neutered. He has been vaccinated for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. If you are interested in Spot, please write to Denise@eskiesonline.com or call Denise at 720-903-0636 for more info.
