My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

4/8/08 Douglass is coming north in a few weeks and needs to find a foster home that will help him transition into a forever home (which he still needs) - he is a good boy that deserves a good home!

UPDATE 3/7/08 Poor Douglas! He was all set to come north and he turned heartworm positive! What a bummer! He will need to be treated in Arkansas before he can travel. He could use some sponsorship funds, and a family waiting for him possibly in April when he is ready to travel.

UPDATE 1/19/08: Check out new pics! Douglas is such a goofy young boy. He's a little over a year old now. Douglas can still play for hours with his fur siblings and would do best in an active home with another dog(s) if possible. If not, a physically active home would be best. We are not sure exactly what he is, but he certainly resembles an Austalian Kelpie (who knows...). He really is a love and just needs some guidance as he is still young. His foster family will be moving very soon and they really are hoping to find him his forever home.

Update 10/15/07: Douglas is doing great in his foster home. He gets along very well with 3 other foster dogs (Chelsea, Clyde, and Millie also on this site). He needs some training as he can be a bit mouthy at times (does not bite, but will put his mouth on you to get you to play) and plays a little rough (will jump up, etc.). However, he adores attention and would LOVE to have an active home. Douglas would like to run and play all day if you let me (perhaps a running/walking partner would be great for him or older children who can play fetch with him). He isn't much for treats (he'll sniff them and then eat them if they are put on the floor), but praise works well with him. Training may take a little longer though since he isn't as motivated by food rewards. He's been a joy though and has not had any accidents in his foster home. Douglas would love to be able to be near everyone and does not care for being put in a crate (whines briefly), but he will mind.
Update 10/09/07: Douglas had to be moved to another foster home temporarily (something came up and the previous foster family had to return him). He was making so much progress in such a short time.. This is what his previous foster parent wrote about him:

This dog is at our partner shelter in Arkansas or in foster care in Arkansas unless otherwise marked as "in Maine" or "In New England".

"Douglas is doing great. I on the other hand am sore. He is going to get me in shape by the time he is adopted, that is for sure. He is funny, he struggles letting people lead him (we are working on); however, when we went walking last night we put Kahlua out in front (to ensure he knows she is "pack leader" and he watched her and followed her every move... He seems to like to break up his food into very very small pieces and swallow. Most dogs gulp right down. Not sure if this will change or not...I did feed him his heart guard as well yesterday ...

As far as personality goes, very playful. He digs a little in the yard but not by the fence to escape. When there are other dogs barking, he ignores. Maybe from his experience at the kennel and always being around barking dogs, but whatever it is, is good. The only time he has really barked has been when our neighbor came in to fix the fence (totally fixed now), but he still kept his distance. Other than that, he loves to run, which is harder for me because I prefer walking. After some more training, this dog will make a great companion for somebody"

Update 10/06/07
Douglas has gone to a very temporary foster home! All he wanted to do when he got out was play play play. Douglas' foster dad is a big fan of Cesar Milan - so we are looking forward to receiving our first update. Thank you so much Paul and Carrie for saving Douglas' life. You have no idea how much we appreciate your help.
