Rusty's Story...
Are you looking for the perfect Macaw! Well almost, maybe not quite perfect, but still a great bird.

If you’re looking for a very handsome Calico Macaw that is not too loud and happy to wander around the house and hang out with you, Rusty could be the bird for you. A Calico Macaw is a cross between a Green Wing Macaw and a Military Macaw. Rusty was surrendered because his one and only owner’s health no longer allowed them to keep birds at home.

I’m very handsome
I’m not too loud (at least for a macaw)
I don’t chew up furniture or electric cords (at least so far)
I step up
I love to sit in my fosters lap and get my head scratched
I love treats and will try to learn new things, especially if nuts, banana chips or fruit loops are involved.
I love being out of my cage, sitting on my tree stand or top of my cage.
I also like to walk around on the floor a bit (if permitted).
I go back in my cage when my mom tells me, especially if a little treat is involved.
I talk a little, I say hello when the phone rings, goodbye when my mom leaves and good night when it's time to go to bed.

I’m a little afraid of spray bottles but am learning to like them a little more when it’s bath time.
Also, I am not crazy about getting in my carrier on my own however, I’m working on that and with lots of treats and positive reinforcement, I’m learning to go in my carrier all on my own
I like to act big and tough sometimes but mostly it's all for show.

If you have large bird experience and would like to meet Rusty, please send us your adoption application.

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Rusty, a St. Louis Macaw was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Macaw for sale in St. Louis, or seeking a Macaw from a breeder in St. Louis.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in St. Louis already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a St. Louis breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Macaw breeders who help with Macaw rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in St. Louis paves the way for another one to be saved.
