My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adopted 3/2/14!!!

Hi Everyone! My name is Sweet Pea and my name fits me perfectly. I am a 12-week old purebred Golden Retriever puppy and everyone says I am cute as a button. I am happy and affectionate, and I love all four of my foster canine siblings. I love to play with those big guys and they love me, too! I am already crate trained and I go potty outside like they do.

Right now I am living with a nice foster family in NJ who took me in because I had nowhere to go. The breeder that I came from gave me away at a dog show because I wasn’t “perfect”. Then, the lady that took me decided that she couldn’t care for me properly, so she gave me to the family where I am now. Can you imagine, this is my third home in 12 weeks! The family that has me now can’t keep me because they already have the most dogs that they can have where they live, so pretty soon I must leave them too. "Why is this happening...?" you ask. Well, I have a medical condition called "megaesophagus." What it means is that the muscles in my esophagus don’t work well. The muscles have a hard time moving my food down to my stomach. I have had x-rays and lots of great doctors look at them and the good news is that my condition is “mild”. They said that sometimes it can go away, but most likely it won’t.

I will grow to be a normal, fabulous Golden, as long as I always have help with two things: I need to eat food that is soupy and smooth, so that I can swallow it easily. And, after I eat, I must sit upright for about 20 minutes so that my food goes down to my stomach. I currently eat small amounts, four times a day. There is a special chair I can use as I grow bigger, which I must stay in for 20 minutes after I eat. It is called a "Bailey Chair" and is used by many dogs who have problems digesting their food. Click here to view a video of a dog using a Baily Chair . And The American Kennel Club also has information about my condition.

I really need my next home to be my forever home, where people have time to train me just like any other puppy, and who have patience and hearts big enough to help me live with my special need. Please, read up on my condition, and if you seriously believe you can love me for who I am, and have the time to devote to me, then please apply, because I need you.

Puppies require a great deal of time, attention, and patience. We can only consider applications for puppies from folks who are home most of the day. Additionally, due to Sweet Pea's medical condition, we will only consider applications from those who display an understanding of the special care she will need throughout her life. If you are already approved to adopt through SGRR, please contact Donna at SunshineGoldens@gmail.com to be considered to adopt Sweet Pea. If not yet approved, please visit our website to lean more and to submit an online application. Click here to visit our website.
We cannot answer inquiries about Sweet pea until you are an approved SGRR applicant.

For dogs under 6 months, the Adopter agrees to have the dog spayed or neutered within 1 month of the dog turning 6 months old. The Adopter agrees to send proof of this to SGRR and SGRR reserves the right to contact the Adopter’s veterinarian for confirmation.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
