My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adopted March 2014!!!

3/14/14 - Charming Copa: Talk about stealing your Foster Mom's heart! Copa watches out the window when she leaves for work, and when she returns home, his is the nose she sees in the window! He alerts the two resident Goldens that Mom's home, and she is greeted by three happy Goldens. And, every morning affectionate Copa greets his Foster Dad with wiggles and giving paw. His favorite toy is a Kong--finding the treat inside--and he will race his foster brother for a tennis ball. He has learned to walk well on a leash, and he is losing weight from his walks around the cranberry bog! This boy gets more handsome every day. He has been alone with free reign in the house for up to six hours with the resident dogs and cats, and does just fine. FM says he is SUCH a good boy, and a family is going to be lucky to have him in their lives.

3/7/14 - Update and Video: The cats in Copa's foster home have figured out that Copa is a big teddy bear! They snuggle with him and lick him and he seems to like it. And he also appears to be a water dog! He is drawn to the water by the cranberry bog where he walks. Since a spa day of bathing and grooming, Copa is walking proud and happy, and he looks as great as he feels. Check out the big snuggle bug laying across his foster dad's lap in his video.

Copa's story: Copa is an 8-year old purebred Golden boy who was brought to his vet in New York to be "put to sleep" because his owner could not care for him properly. The vet saw what a wonderful boy Copa is with his delightful Golden personality and knew his life was so worth saving! Thus the vet convinced his former owner to relinquish ownership of Copa and the vet contacted Sunshine to find this charming fellow his forever home.

Copa is now living happily at a foster home in southeastern MA with two senior resident Goldens and cats and gets along well with all of them. Sweet Copa is affectionate and has an easy-going temperament, loving people and craving human attention -- everything we wish for in a Golden. He knows the "sit" and "down" commands and wants to please you. When you come into the room, he wiggles with happiness! Copa is trustworthy in the house so he does not need to be crated, which is good because he does not like to be crated. Something from Copa’s past has caused him to not like being approached from the front when being leashed and he will make a funny face to express his feelings. His foster family just fastens his leash from his side and finds this works very well with him. Copa is a big snuggle bug and loves laying across his foster dad's lap as you can see in his video. He shows his love with licks and kisses, Much like humans hold hands, Copa even tries to take his human's arm in his mouth as a sign of affection. This boy is just too cute!

Copa is beautiful and a recent grooming brought out the shine in his long golden coat, and his thick light tail! He has a distinguishing feature that makes him special – he has dark skin around his eyes from some tear staining caused by a mild eye condition that does not affect his vision or cause him discomfort, but gives him an adorable Panda Bear appearance.

Copa takes phenobarbital twice daily for control of seizures. (Phenobarbital is an inexpensive maintenance medicine, costing about $30 per month.) His seizures are under control at his current dosage, which has just been rechecked by his vet. Copa came to us with weakness in his back legs, which we suspect is due to a lack of exercise in his former home, other than outside quickly to potty. He has now gone from walks around the block, to walks around a cranberry bog and is doing so well.

Everyone who meets Copa falls in love with him; he just grabs your heart and you don't forget him. If you are looking for a wonderful senior boy who just wants to be with you, please consider Copa. You will not be disappointed.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
