My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

UPDATED BIO 02-27-2014: STALLONE is a 10 year young 3 lb 3 oz male yorkie; he is being fostered in The Villages, FL.

Stallone was rescued from a high-kill shelter – he is painfully thin and has a rotten mouth with pus-filled pockets and loose teeth. He also has a broken jaw. This is a very painful condition ~ he cannot close his mouth nor eat normally. He is still a happy little boy who loves to snuggle and amazingly, still trusts people. He does show signs of prior abuse, so it’s a testament to his strong spirit that this brave little boy can still trust.

Stallone had a consultation appointment with surgeon Dr. Carlos Aragon at Affiliated Veterinarian Services in Gainesville several days ago. Sadly, Dr. Aragon has seen other yorkies with this same condition, due to lack of dental care. In order to surgically repair Stallone’s jaw, he will need to have a B-I-G surgery for such a tiny little fella. The surgery is called an Open Reduction and Internal Fixation with locking plates and a bone graft. Stallone will need to wear a splint-type muzzle for 6-8 weeks, allowing the fracture to heal properly. Because of this, he will also have an Esophagestomy, which is a feeding tube inserted at the time of surgery so that he can receive proper nutrition during this healing period.

Stallone is very hungry, but is only able to lap up a warmed mixture of canned AD food and pedialyte, which doesn’t provide him with enough calories. Stallone should weigh at least 5-5 ½ lbs in order to be a healthier weight. The feedings via the feeding tube will provide the much-needed nutrients to help his body heal faster.

Stallone’s surgery is estimated to cost between $2,100 to $2,300. UYR is committed to this little fella so that he can have a happier and healthier life. We are asking our animal-loving friends to help us give Stallone a happy and long life ~ even a small donation of $1 is appreciated at this time. Stallone still has a lot of love to give to his adoptive family, and we want to provide him that opportunity. Without this surgery, his chances of survival are guarded. Thanks to all who have already contributed to the costs of his surgery – you are all appreciated!!

MEET STALLONE! He is a 10 year old skinny little fella who only weighs only 3 lbs 3 oz; he would be a much healthier weight if he weighed closer to 5 - 5 1/2 lbs. Stallone is being fostered in The Villages, FL. His adoption donation is $195.00

Stallone was taken to a high-kill shelter by an acquaintance of his former owner who told them to “throw him in the trash can”. How horrible and cruel! He is very underweight due to a broken jaw which has resulted in him being unable to close his mouth. He cannot eat food in the conventional manner, although when wet food is mixed with warm water, he laps it up! He tries very hard to eat kibble, but due to severe dental disease including rotting teeth, his body has begun to resorb his jawbone which further exacerbates the problem. Stallone has nuclear sclerosis in both eyes due to age, but does not have cataracts. His hearing is excellent and he appears to be a happy little boy and is super sweet and loving.

Stallone deserves better treatment than he has had in his past. He shows signs of former abuse – he will cower when Foster Mom tries to pick him up. We don’t have a history on him, but UYR will do everything possible to help this little boy have a better life. He will be seen by a surgeon on Wednesday who will determine if he has enough bone to either wire his jaw shut until the fracture heals, or to endure a bone graft in order to do this procedure. It's possible that nothing can be done for his jaw, but he is already a survivor and hopefully, he will be a candidate for medical intervention to get him on his way to a healthier life. Please say some prayers for this brave little boy who has already suffered enough pain. Stay tuned for more info as it becomes available.
