My name is Tater Tot!

UPDATED BIO 6/26/14: Tater Tot is an 11 pound bundle of Yorkie love. He just celebrated his 4th birthday on May 1, 2014 at his foster home in Davie, FL.

Tater was surrendered to UYR by his adoptive family because of his severe separation anxiety and potty training issues. They worked with him for a year, and they loved him very much, but they could not provide the full time home environment that he needs.

Tater has been through a variety of medical testing to determine the source of his excessive thirst and urination. All physical causes have been ruled out at this time, leaving the veterinarian to find that the cause is psychogenic. For some reason Tater's brain tells him to drink until as much as he can, and then he cannot possibly hold it all in for long. Tater

Tater suffers from severe separation anxiety, and he cannot be crated nor confined, both for the sake of his family's furnishings and for his own safety. Any confinement causes him great stress, and accelerates his drinking/urination problems.



Tater is also a known runner- even though he is treated like a prince in his foster home, he was recently caught digging an escape route under the fence!



With all of this said, Tater Tot is an absolute doll to have around. He is very quiet, and he loves nothing better than to sit on a couch or lap and watch TV. He walks on a leash like a true gentleman, and he desperately tries NOT to potty in the house.



Tater's foster family has been able to minimize his stress and manage his symptoms. While the issues may never be gone, after several months of patient effort, they are mostly under control. They have adapted Tater's environment to his needs, and he is now doing very well.



Tater is looking for a quiet, all adult household where at least one person is home most of the time. Most of his accidents happen when he is alone and stressed. If someone is with him, Tater asks to go out to do his business. He also responds well when he is told he has had enough to drink. Tater does not like to sleep alone, so he has found a good spot in bed with foster mom and dad. He sleeps peacefully through most nights. He tolerates other pets but does not really like to play, and sometimes he feels like he has to guard his foster mom from the others. He'd really like to be king of his own castle.Tater travels well in the car, and he adapts well to new surroundings, as long as his trusted people are with him.

Updated BIO 04/01/2014: Tater Tot is an almost 4 year old, 11 lb Yorkie boy being fostered in Davie, FL.



Tater was surrendered to UYR by his loving family because he was having extreme difficulty with being left alone while they worked. He was drinking excessive amounts of water, and he was unable to control his excessive urination. He also kept finding ways to escape from their house and yard into the busy neighborhood streets. Their concern for his well-being led them to make this difficult decision, and we were glad to welcome him back to UYR.



Since he has been back in his foster home, Tater has undergone several medical tests to find the cause of his excessive thirst and urination. So far our veterinarians have not been able to find any physical reason for these issues. The doctor is currently trying to rule out diabetes insipidus, using eye drops to see if they control his symptoms. Tater does seem to have severe separation anxiety, and he cannot be left alone for long periods. As long as his foster parents are home, he relaxes and alerts when he needs to go out. He comes up to Foster Mom, gently puts his paws on her leg, and runs to the door. He KNOWS what he’s supposed to do, but she or Foster Dad have to be there so he can tell them! He sleeps in bed with them, and he makes it through the night with no problem. He follows Foster Mom around the house all day, and that seems to keep him pretty well accident-free.



Tater is a known escape artist. He has no fear of traffic or big dogs so he needs close supervision and no access to the world outside his home unless he is in his harness and on a leash.



Tater is a sweet, loving little boy who loves to be picked up and snuggled. He doesn’t show any interest in toys and is only slightly interested in his foster brothers and sisters. Once in a while he notices the cats and decides to chase them.



Tater Tot is looking for a very special home- one that will help him manage is urinary issues with nothing but love and patience- he can’t help it, so his parents will need to make sure his environment is able to withstand accidents. He needs a quiet adult home (older teens should be fine) with at least one parent home most of the time. He does not handle confinement well, but he will go in a crate if it is absolutely necessary. His foster parents are working on using potty pads for him as well. Carpet and rugs would NOT be a good mix with this little guy! Tater would like to be an only dog, but he would be okay with a calm, kind fur brother or sister- no rowdy youngsters, please!



Tater’s forever home must have a fully fenced yard. His family said he used to dig out of their yard. Foster Mom’s fence is buried, so it hasn’t been a problem there. The house must be secure so that he cannot bolt out the doors. Tater is not much of a barker, so he might do well in an apartment or condo environment as long as he can be taken out as needed. Again, tile floors are a must.



Tater is a gem. He’s quiet, a little shy, and he’s pretty scared. He has been bounced around too much in his short life for things he can’t control. He’s looking for just the right family to give him a warm, safe, secure environment so that he can give them all the love he has to give.
