My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Eddie's adoption fee is $350.

Eddie is a 4 ½ year old Shih Tzu mix that came to rescue as a stray. He is neutered, up to date on vaccines and micro chipped, and he weighs about 16 pounds. Eddie has blossomed into a very loving dog from the scared, untouchable dog that came in January. He has issues with cats, so a home without cats is a must.

Eddie has a lot of personality and will come to you and mumble and chat to let you know he wants something - all you need to do is figure out what it is. He has learned to sit nicely for a treat, without even being asked. Although he likes to play fetch with you (he doesn’t bring toys back to you), he prefers to play alone. He loves to be outside, and will sit at the patio door and just watch the world go by if he can’t be outside. He loves going for walks and still pulls a bit on the first half, but settles for the last half.

If he barks at the neighbours or at hearing a dog bark in the distance, a quick stern “leave it” seems to do the trick. We have used a vibration collar in his training which has helped immensely reinforcing commands. He is afraid of thunderstorms and fireworks, but wearing a Thundershirt (applied at the right time) seems to help with this situation.

He is neither here nor there with other dogs. He will meet and sniff and then will just go about his own business. He rides well in the car now, normally just laying down and sleeping, either in the front or in the back. He’s crate trained (may complain a bit) but we have found he is fine through the workday and at night being loose in the house with the resident dog. At night, he will start sleeping on the bed with us and then will move to a bed on the floor by our bed.

Eddie does have issues with groomers and vets, which we are working on. He gives growling and snapping warnings and will bite if actions persist. We feel that Eddie would be best suited to a calm adult home with an experienced owner who is willing to continue to work on his fears and strong attitude.
