My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

SHAW is a 4 year old yellow neutered male who weighs 61 pounds (needs to gain 12 lbs). Shaw is a good old country boy, easy going likes to hang with you and get attention. Shaw would probably not do well in a, apartment/condo or big city environment. He is good with other dogs, played with several at shelter and kennel. He hasn’t shown much interest in retrieving will go over and see what you tossed and looks at you as if to say “What am I supposed to do with that?” He is approved for kids ages 10 and up.

Update (6/10): Shaw's heartworm rest period is up on June 14th. Yay! He will need to be introduced to exercise slowly. Shaw continues to be a sweet dog. He loves being around his people and is diplomatic by sharing his time equally between the humans in the house. He is calm in the house and will tell you if he needs to go out by going up to the door and looking at it. He gets a little too excited by cats, but we don't know for sure how he is with cats. Like any good lab he likes his treats, and he likes to play with his kong to get his treats. He learns new commands quickly, and has been working on stay, sit, lay and beg at table. He is proficient in all of these and his beg at table skills up against the best. He will make someone a great boy. He is as sweet as they come and as soon as this rest period is over will be so happy so he can get back to his favorite pastime of lounging in the yard and chasing squirrels.

Update (4/26): Shaw is a good boy who is very friendly to everyone he meets. When he sees anyone he doesn't know, he is right up there saying hello and introducing himself. He is a happy little guy, and loves hanging outside. He has settled in nicely with his foster family. He hasn't needed to be crated during the work day and does great. He will sleep through the night and not bother you until you wake up. Shaw is definitely a people dog and loves hanging with his people. He keeps a vigilant watch over the yard from the window, the squirrels have had a rough go of it this last week. He is enthusiastic on his walks and pulls some. He would benefit from an ez walk harness. He's a smart boy, we've been working on a few commands and he's picked them up quickly.

Update (3/22): Shaw has arrived and is a dream. He's incredibly handsome and very well behaved. He is strong, but does well with an Easy Walk harness. He rode perfectly and quiet the whole way home. Once here he met his foster's dogs individually and was great and then was quickly let off lead to enjoy and explore the yard. He does seem to prefer calmer, more mature dogs, so maybe no spring chickens for Shaw. So far house trained, and he doesn't chew on anything really - no toys yet, and certainly nothing he's not supposed to. He's made himself at home on the sofa.

Update (3/19): Shaw is doing great, his thyroid medicines have kicked in and he is feeling a better. When I come into the kennel he is always at the front of his room, with his tail wagging and a grin on his face, waiting for me to take him out to play When we go out the first thing he does is come up to get some attention and loving. He would love for someone to come meet him.

NOTE: Shaw has Hypothyroidism which is easily controlled with relatively low cost medicine. It is a clinical condition resulting from a lowered production and release of T4 and T3 hormones by the thyroid gland. It is also more commonly diagnosed in middle-aged dogs between the ages of 4-10 years. The treatment is medication is replacement of deficient hormones which are given in synthetic form, with the dosage adjusted occasionally based on your dog's individual physical condition and progress. Most clinical symptoms will resolve after a few months with routine blood tests.
