My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

UPDATE 9/4/09: Earlier this year, during one of Lao Shu’s ultrasound exams, it was determined that his bladder tumor was smaller! Every ultrasound since then has continued to show shrinkage, until his latest ultrasound which shows the tumor to be completely gone! His doctor then performed a special ultrasound using a catheter this past week to confirm this finding, and, yes, he is free and clear of any bladder mass. Lao Shu has been deemed healthy by his doctor and is now available for adoption. Lao Shu loves to be loved and enjoys being curled up on the couch with his foster mom. He would do best in a home with no other dogs, or with one that will allow him to share mom’s lap. And yes, it must be a “mom”--Lao Shu still carries some fear of men from his puppy mill days. He now allows his foster dad to pick him up and touch him, but he doesn’t really like it. He also will curl up with some of the other dogs on the couch, but he prefers “all” of the attention and can get snippy at the others if they want mom’s attention, too. He is crate-trained, but he would prefer not to be in it. He would definitely love to cuddle with someone in bed--something that he has not been able to do in his foster home. Lao Shu continues to wear a belly band, especially when in his crate (he loves to lift his leg in the crate to show his displeasure!) and when he is not being watched carefully in the house. He loves to go outside and run at greyhound speed around the yard--he sometimes forgets to pee while out, so he needs someone out there with him to remind him. Lao Shu will come with his complete wardrobe of clothes and belly bands--he loves to have his clothes changed, but likes to hide when he sees the belly band coming out. Lao Shu is not currently on any medications, but he would do best on a premium, no-grain diet. He has learned to play with toys, but his idea of playing is “destroying toys in 30 seconds or less”. He does well with stuffed toys that no longer have any insides left--he loves to shake them and carry them outside with him. Lao Shu has become a very happy, loving dog. He is currently 6-½ years old and has many years left to share with his furever family. He would do best with an adult female who is home most of the time--someone retired, works from home, or works part-time.

UPDATE 9/7/08: Lao Shu continues to have ultrasound exams every three months to determine the growth of his mass. Although the mass has not shrunk, it has not grown, either--that is a good thing!! He continues on maintenance medication to help contain this tumor. Since being on a special anti-cancer diet with special supplements, he has made great improvements. He now has hair growing on his tail and feet, with even more on his face and head! He has begun to play with the other dogs, something he has not been interested in doing before. He is finally feeling better and learning how to be a "real" dog--something he was not able to experience while living his days in a puppy mill.

UPDATE
Sadly, Lao Shu has been diagnosed with terminal bladder cancer. We hoped he would be a candidate for surgery, but he is not. This type of cancer, and it's location at the bladder wall, is such that it would only recur in a short time. Lao Shu's foster mom is going to keep caring for him until he is no longer happy and exhibits a poor quality of life. However, his vet bills will keep coming for the medications he needs to keep him comfortable and free of opportunistic infections. Any donations for him will be appreciated.

Lao Shu is a very affectionate Chinese Crested Hairless approximately 5 years old. He was a puppymill stud dog and spent most of his life inside a wire cage. Lao Shu is enjoying his new found freedom immensely and appears to cherish every moment. He jumps up in excitement to greet people he knows, and prefers the company of humans to that of other dogs and cats. Not that he doesn't get along with them - he just doesn't go out of his way to befriend them. Being a mill dog, Lao Shu was never housebroken so he has been wearing a bellyband in the house. But he is learning that dogs potty outdoors by going out with the other dogs - when he first arrived in his foster home he didn't understand that concept at all and just stood next to the door to come back in. Now he wanders around the yard with the others and does his thing. He is smart and it's expected that the bellyband will soon be a thing of the past. Since he has never been around children, homes with any younger than teens won't be considered. Lao Shu will be a wonderful, loving companion to someone who is able to give him the time and attention and love that he deserves. He is being fostered in Manlius, NY and his asking adoption fee is $250.
