Giovanni is a sweet, affectionate and loving one-year-old, 14 lb., Dachshund/Terrier mix rescued from the Devore Animal Shelter as a field stray. It is hard to imagine him wandering the streets because he loves to be inside the house with his people! Giovanni's favorite thing is to nap on the day bed, near his foster mom as she works from home. He enjoys being up on the beds and couches, so we need an adopter who is OK with a small dog being up on the furniture. He also enjoys playing with the other young dog in his foster home. Even though he is smaller than Wally, he will do his best to chase and wrestle with the bigger dog. If you pick Giovanni up and hold him, he will lavish you with kisses.

Giovanni learned how to use the doggie door on the first day, and has not had one potty accident in the house. Even though he is currently living with two other male dogs, Giovanni has not lifted his leg in the house. Of course, he will need to adjust to any new environment, especially if no doggie door is available. Giovanni’s fur is also low-maintenance. It is wiry like a terrier or wirehaired Dachshund. He will need an occasional brushing and obviously, an occasional home front bath, but we do not see any need for a trip to the professional groomer. However, if an adopter so chooses, one can groom (cut) his hair shorter, for a less “wiry” look!

Giovanni likes to chew on rawhides and play with toys, but he is not generally destructive or hyper. However, due to his young age and immaturity, he can still have a penchant to get into stuff, similar to “curiosity killed the cat” but this has been mild. Giovanni walks well on leash and only requires a moderate level of exercise. He does require some training for basic obedience like "sit" and "stay.” Giovanni is food- motivated, but also stubborn. He sees the treat, but does not agree that he must put his butt down in order to get it! He needs an owner who can out-stubborn him and make sure he learns the task at hand!

Giovanni seems to like dogs and people equally. He has not been tested with kids or cats. Giovanni is an all-around "wash and wear" jeans and a t-shirt rough and tumble kind of guy. His best fit would be a home with another dog, to be his canine playmate and friend; however, we may choose to place him as the only dog in the home if the fit is right. A possible concern might be that he has a long back so his new owners should be aware and not let him jump down, or leap from high places. Doggy stairs to the bed might be a good idea!

Giovanni is neutered, de-wormed, vaccinated including rabies, and micro-chipped. If you are interested in Giovanni, please contact Angel's Heart Dog Rescue at: adopt@angelsheartdogrescue.com.
