My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

The first step is to fill out an application. You will find it here at: http://www.caninecupids.org/adopt-.html.

We have no physical shelter but are a 100% volunteer foster home based organization. All of our dogs are from the Milwaukee, WI area.

Location: Milwaukee, WI
Adoption Fee: $150

Dozer is a laid back older guy with no medical issues. Loves being outside and on walks, but cannot run fast or for very long. He runs a bit, but mainly just walks and sniffs. As a retriever, he still likes to play some fetch with toys, mostly inside. Has been fine being left alone - even up to 10 hours some days.

He would prefer to be an only dog so that he gets ALL the attention!

He is good on a leash and really appreciates a good walk at least once a day. Has been getting some longer walks on the weekend and tires him out. Likes to play with toys and absolutely loves walks. He gets excited whenever you put your coat on because he knows it means you're going out.

Dozer is very affectionate, and a typical Golden - will tuck his head under your hand to be petted, and loves any type of affection. He even likes to snuggle on the couch with his family. Does not give many kisses though, mainly a snuggly guy that loves to be petted. His fur makes him feel like a soft teddy bear.

He is very friendly with mostly all dogs. As long as they are polite to him, he is polite to them. We are not sure how he is with cats or kids, but he seems that he would be fine in a home with kids of any age. He does seem a little playful despite his older age.

Very confident. He loves everyone and goes right up to them. Just a tail wagging, friendly dog. Does not really give kisses, but just wants to be petted. He has a tendency to continue to move while being petted and if there are multiple people, he will continue to trot to each one for some attention.

Dozer loves to be outside. He really likes sniffing things, will mark on certain bushes. He enjoys walks and gets excited just at the word or when he goes over to the door. Likes to still play fetch, but more so with plush toys inside. He does not have a ton of puppy energy outside to run around, but is a huge goof inside with his toys. Did like his bone as well and we are still learning about him. Treats! Loves treats of all kinds. Drinks a ton of water. Is very interested in food and anything that tastes good. I've found that like many other dogs, he loves popcorn and catches pieces that I throw to him with ease and loves it as a game.

Dozer knows: Sit, Shake, Lay Down, Speak, Come, his name - Dozer. Could learn more. He gets very excited for treats and sort of does all of his tricks at once.

When Dozer gets excited he will half jump up and down and sometimes bark which is pretty funny. If we say walk or start putting on coats to go outside he will run to the door and do a half jump again. When he wants to play he will pick up his big plush toy and bring it over to play. He looks very young when doing that. Also, if you are petting him and you stop, he will duck under your idle hand and move so that you are petting him again - a typical move of golden retrievers that I've noticed. He also follows me around and lays outside the doors if I'm getting ready or showering. He also will go lay on the floor, but if he can manage to get on a couch, he will get up and try to lay as close or on top of you as possible. Traits of both Goldens and being older - he lumbers around and reminds me of Snuffaluffagus and is a bit of a clutz. His tail is wagging and can knock stuff over and he will bump into walls and tables sometimes but is just a big goof. Loves life.

He is extremely friendly and well-mannered. Just an easy dog to take care of and please. He goes for walks willingly and does what he is told. And for an older guy, he's very friendly and playful. Oh, and he's quite beautiful!

As a senior dog, Dozer needs lots of water. He likes attention as well. He needs a good walk if he's going to go potty since he tends to go multiple times instead of all at once. Also, bring a bag on the walk, he doesn't usually go #2 in the yard and will do it in the course of a walk. A couple good walks a day will do him well, though one walk should satisfy. He can't jump or get up on things very easily, so if you want him on the couch or a bed, he will need a step. If you don't want him to sleep with you, then that's a barrier to that. Multiple toys and treats are other needs. He will need to be brushed too. As a long haired dog, he sheds quite a bit. He has a beautiful plush coat that needs to be kept free of tangles.

Dozer's perfect day would be getting up, going for a nice long walk, then playing fetch. After that a relaxing day of being petted and snuggling. Or sleeping on a cool floor somewhere in the house, as long as he's with his family. Another walk to end the day and some training with TREATS. Then snuggling until bed time would be a perfect day.

Dozer is a typical Golden Retriever/Lab. He loves attention, has a good amount of energy to walk and loves being outside. He is well-mannered and well behaved. Knows lots of tricks and has obviously been living with someone for his whole life. He has gotten away and been at MADACC multiple times, so he must always be on a leash. As a senior dog, he needs to be let out a little bit more and needs his exercise even if he doesn't seem like he has a ton of energy. He's a great dog and would be perfect for a family or a single person looking for an easy going dog.

Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable so for most of our adoptable Cupids we are only guessing at the predominant breed or breed mix. We think what is more important is to get to know each dog as an individual and then do our best to describe each of our adoptable Cupids based on their personality in order to determine if they will make a good companion based on your lifestyle. We dot like a dog to be "labeled". Dog behavior is not a breed thing exclusively. It is a complex mix of nature and nurture.
