Jared's Story...
UPDATE 03-08-14 Jared was adopted back in October, but the family had to bring him back to the Shelter, because he decided to jump their fence and roam the neighborhood. However, he is now housetrained and was great with their 18 month old child. He was also good with other dogs, spent some time playing with 3 Beagles. Jared is a pretty smart guy, so he needs an active life - maybe running with his owner or playing with the kids in a fenced yard then going inside to rest. He seems to do pretty well on a leash, so would enjoy even taking walks to expend some energy. Might you be the one for Jared or better yet, might he be the dog for you?
UPDATE 10-20-13 We took Jared to a Fall Festival event at a local elementary school and he was a real hit. So many little hands rubbing his back and head. He loved the attention and they loved giving it to him. When he wasn't being petted, he was laying in his crate playing with his toy. We also took him to a Walmart adoption Saturday event and again his sweet disposition shined. A 4 year old boy took a piece of kibble out of his bowl and held it for Jared to take, Jared gently took it from the tiny fingers. It was such a sweet moment. Whoever adopts Jared is truly getting a sweet friendly guy.
AVAILABLE 08-25-12 Back on 08-19-12 Jared ended up at the Animal Shelter in Elizabeth City. We're not sure how he got there, but he's here and ready for a new home. He seems to have some Lab, maybe Chow or Boxer in his heritage. He's a sweet friendly guy, but probably spent most of his life at the end of a chain. He has fly bitten ears, is a bit thin and had a two inch wide thick collar on. While I was walking him one day, I took the collar off (he still had the slip lead on). It was like the weight of the world had been removed from his neck. He almost seemed to turn towards me and smile; he walked with a lighter step - almost prancing. We have found that Jared really didn't know what a toy was nor a bed; but he seems to have settled right into his Karunda bed and spends quite a bit of time in it. He tested negative for heart worms, has been given preventative along with his vaccinations. If he could become the part of a loving family, we have a feeling that Jared would be one of the most loyal canine companions anyone could have. Please come in and meet Jared - don't just walk past him.

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Jared, a Elizabeth City Labrador Retriever/Golden Retriever dog was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Labrador Retriever/Golden Retriever for sale in Elizabeth City, or seeking a Labrador Retriever/Golden Retriever dog from a breeder in Elizabeth City.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in Elizabeth City already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a Elizabeth City breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Labrador Retriever/Golden Retriever breeders who help with Labrador Retriever/Golden Retriever rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in Elizabeth City paves the way for another one to be saved.
