My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Handsome Alley D the cuddle gangsta

Why do we call him the cuddle gangsta? Because one look at that face and you just want to squeeze and hug him like a big ol' teddy bear. Alley D is just about as sweet as they come and has a fantastically calm demeanor. A 4 year old German Shepherd/Shiba Inu mix, he seems to embody the best of each breed.

His natural discipline works well to his advantage and will make him an excellent family member. His command knowledge includes: sit, lay, wait, out, potty, and we're working on whoa/heel - and we're discovering every day how much more he knows! He walks very well on a leash, but he is a big boy and has some serious strength...that combined with his standard shepherd stubbornness can make for an interesting walk if he deems something sniff-worthy. Be prepared to stand around while he takes his time investigating all the things we would never dream of smelling.

Alley D does very well with other dogs and is currently using a kennel while the people are away. He loves his kennel. Having his own personal space seems very important to this boy. In fact, this has proven to be the only instance we see any kind of so-called "negative" communication with other dogs. This would also be a standard shepherd trait...claim a space and guard it. He does not want other dogs in his kennel and rightfully so...this boy came from the streets and now that he has his own personal space to feel safe and comfortable, of course he's going to definitively say "NO!" to any other dog who'd like to invade. That said, his communication skills seem to be one-sided: he effectively communicates without aggression to other dogs and people (dogs lift lips, sometimes show a little teeth, give a warning growl and that's just fine cuz that's their way), but he doesn't seem to recognize when other dogs are communicating clear messages of "back off" or "watch out" and for this reason, he needs a bit of monitoring when playing with others.

On that note, Alley D is a player. Not in the use you and toss you out kind of way...nope. Alley D posits adorable play behavior, bowing and pouncing and nudging others to run and wrestle. Indeed, the best home for this big boy will include a playful, romping, joyful dog buddy. He needs to play and needs to have a fenced in yard to run. The next best thing to a canine playmate would be a person who is active and loves to play outside. Alley D isn't all that into playing with toys (who knows if he ever even had a toy), but is learning to play with people. When we try to run with him around the yard, he promptly tries to get another dog to join the game. When we throw a ball, he enthusiastically bounces after the ball, but promptly lays down next to it waiting for belly rubs.

Oh belly rubs! Alley D absolutely craves pets and scratches and rubs. He doesn't push for it...he's not the annoying, up-in-yo-face kinda dog. Nope. Rather, he's perfectly content to wait for you to show him the love. His favorite activity is watching, be it in the yard watching the world around or in the car or in the house. And to boot, he's quiet. He does chatter when excited and talk when he's playing, but he watches the world and doesn't make a peep - no barking at squirrels or dogs or wind going by. He's awesome like that!

In a nutshell, Alley D is just about as phenomenal as they come. He's the best of both worlds...chill, quiet, big, and lovable, yet energetic, playful, super smart, and protective if he needs to be.

Adoption fee is $90. Thank you for wanting to share your home with one of our rescued pups!

If you are a parent adopting for your children, please remember we do pick the best home for our pups. If there are 2 applications that come in at the same time, for example, and one will be a better fit, that is the one we choose. Many parents pump up their children about getting a specific puppy, and it can be very sad for the child if the particular puppy isn't a good fit unbeknownst to them. We put this disclaimer here because a couple of parents have been upset when a home that used doggy daycare & had a fenced in yard was chosen over crate-all-day without a backyard. Peace.
