My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adopted 4/11/14!!!

4/19/14 Foster Update: Goldy is fitting right into our routine and with the resident dogs. She does not come into my bedroom, but I noticed her sitting in the hallway right outside my bedroom door so I moved her bed to the doorway where she could see us. She climbed right in! She doesn't give affection yet but seems to enjoy getting it! And she barks at noises -- a good little watch dog! She now comes in from outside when I call her name. And if we are all outside and she has had enough, she just pushes open the door and goes in to her bed. I took her to the dog park yesterday and she was fine with dogs and people. She does not hangout with us yet , but seems to want to know where I am. She is majorly cute!

Goldy's Story: Little Goldy came to Sunshine from a shelter on Long Island, NY. This pretty senior girl was found as a stray and no one came looking for her. First estimated to be about 12 years of age, we now suspect she may be younger. She weighs about 35 lbs and is a mix of Golden, sweetness, and gentleness. She has a lovely, extra soft coat. Her small size makes her very endearing. She is such a good girl…. well behaved, house trained, does not bark, and is not demanding. Goldy loves going on leashed walks and being outside. She trots along nicely with her tail up, ears flapping, and a big smile! (Did you notice those adorable ears and big eyes??) Goldy appears to be slightly hard of hearing, although not totally deaf. When our volunteer sat on a picnic bench and held Goldy's head in her hands, Goldy looked straight at her with affection. Goldy is not a needy dog. She is on the independent side, and we suspect she was never "included" with her people throughout most of her life. After three days with her Foster Mom, she is warming up and relaxing--wagging her tail when she sees her Foster Mom. She is indifferent to the resident dogs, so we feel she can live happily with or without other dogs in her forever home. She will be so happy to have her own person.

Goldy has been fully vetted, and has a benign tumor on her side that does not need to be removed. She has some arthritis (not a surprise for a senior citizen), and is on medication to help her.

Do you have a quiet home and a soft bed for this adorable, dignified older girl? We know that people who adopt seniors are special people, and Goldy will be so grateful for your kindness! Plus, she will make a great walking companion and enrich your life, she is such a sweet soul.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
