PeeWee is an adorable Chihuahua who came from an elderly breeder in 2012 whose set up could be described as that of a puppy mill or hoarder. She was 83 yrs old and walked with a walker; as a result, she was unable to bend over and touch the dogs and had not done so in several years. The dogs were living in very dirty and unsanitary conditions such that all of her puppies were dying. CCHS staff had visited her a year previously and asked her to please release the dogs to us, but she had refused as she said that she needed the money that she made selling the puppies, but when she called us to take the dogs, she noted that the puppies were not surviving and she could no longer manage the situation.

While this lady loved the dogs, the conditions and situation in which they lived had caused the dogs to become shy. We have been keeping them in a kennel together and we bring them inside the Adoption Center for socialization. While still shy, they are doing better and several of them have been adopted.
However, anyone who is interested must be very devoted, patient and understanding of what these dogs have been through and be very gentle and patient with them through their adoption transition. One of our staff has adopted one and would be happy to discuss with you how the transition went with his dog and his family.

PeeWee was 7 1/2 yrs old when she came to us. She is not house trained, but they are trained to use a pee pad. She is current on all vaccines, heartworm negative, dewormed, on heartworm preventative, and she is spayed and microchipped.

About Cleveland County Humane Society, Inc

About Our Shelter...

While we desperately want to place all of our animals in loving adoptive homes, our goal is to place each pet in the RIGHT home. If we do not think that a home is a good match for one of our pets, we will not allow that pet to leave our shelter. We do reserve the right to refuse placing any pet in any home for any reason. We are looking for responsible pet owners and one of the ways that we evaluate perspective adopters is to look at the type of pet owner they are or have been to previous pets or to the other pets in their home. While we have general rules regarding young children, fencing, other pets, etc. we consider each case individually depending on the animal being considered for adoption. We stress again, that we are looking for adopters to make a commitment for the life of the animal they are adopting, so please, be sure of the choice you are making before you sign the adoption papers. While we will always take back an animal that comes from our shelter, it is very hard on an animal to be returned to the shelter, so please, make your home a forever home for the animal you adopt.

Our Adoption Process...

Cat Adoption Fee: $100 (includes FeLeuk/FIV test, age appropriate vaccines, deworm, spay/neuter, and microchip)

Dog Adoption Fee: $100 (includes Heartworm test, age appropriate vaccines, deworm, spay/neuter, and microchip)

We ask all people interested in one of our pets to come and visit the pet to see if the personality is a good fit for the person(s) adopting the pet. If it is, the next step is to complete an Adoption Consultation Form to tell us a little about you so that our Adoption Committee can see if we think the pet is a good match for you. We will also complete a veterinary reference whenever possible. We require that most of our cats be indoor only and that most of our medium and large dogs have fenced yards. In such cases for dogs, someone will come to your home and check your fence to insure that it is secure for the dog. Once the Adoption Consultation Form is completed and turned, you should hear back from our shelter staff within 3-4 working days about your approval for adoption of the animal (varies depending on ability to contact veterinarian, holidays and staff work schedules). If you live out of town, we will be glad to send you an Adoption Consultation Form via email or fax before you visit and allow you the opportunity to talk with our shelter manager about the pet that you are interested in so that we can work through some of the formalities and determine if the pet is a good fit for you before you make a long trip to visit the pet and to avoid multiple trips to expedite the adoption. We want everyone take their time deciding about the pet that they are considering as we ask that you make this adoption a commitment for the life of the animal. We want you to be a FOREVER home for the pet!
