4/12/14 Foster Update: Sully has stolen his Foster Family's hearts! They say Sully is affectionate, laid back, and sweet as can be. And this nice gentleman is feeling so much better! He is ready to ride, play ball, go for a walk, or take a nap! Just look at the difference in his 2 new photos!
And what a great companion Sully is! He's a dream on a leash--he met the neighborhood dogs (a big male Golden and a Springer Spaniel), and they all socialized nicely with smiles, sniffs, and waggy tails! The big Golden walked along and Sully enjoyed the company! While he doesn’t seem to hear anything, he’s adapted beautifully to it. He may regain some hearing when his ear infections are cleared up, but he is happy either way! The good news is that thunder and fireworks, vacuums and leaf blowers don’t bother him a bit! One of Sully's favorite things is playing fetch. For an older gent, he plays fetch with the best of 'em, bringing a ball back and dropping it right at our feet! His Foster Mom says Sully is house trained, does not counter surf, does not get into anything inappropriate, and sleeps well all night next to your bed, or finds another comfy spot in the house to have sweet dreams. He's a very, very good boy!!
Sully's Story: Sully was a man-about-town for quite a while. He lived on the streets and was spotted often. Finally, a Good Samaritan was able to get him to a shelter and Sunshine was called to help him. His pictures are from his shelter days and show a sad boy: malnourished, with long toenails that made it difficult to walk, ear infections, and a coarse, thin coat, probably due to poor nutrition. After examining Sully, our vet said to the Good Samaritan, "I want to thank you so much for saving this Golden, because he is just the NICEST old Gentleman!"
We have found that to be so true! He has accepted treatment for his health issues with grace and dignity. We suspect his ear infections have been chronic, and that he hears very little. We also feel he will not become a jogging partner as his hips are not good, but he moves along well with the help of NSAIDS. Shorter walks and a ramp to get in and out of cars will be best for him. At 45 lbs and a goal weight of 60 lbs, he is now in a foster home getting lots of loving and plenty of food to fatten him up. Once he is at a healthy weight, he can be neutered.
Sully is as sweet as a Golden Retriever can be. He follows his foster parents everywhere and wags his tail constantly. He walks nicely on a leash, is great in the car, and gets along fine with the resident cats. He was also fine with a dog he met at the vet's clinic. He is a bit of a picky eater, not enjoying peanut butter but loving cheese and milk bones!! We believe Sully must have been an outside dog because he hesitates coming into the house and must be coaxed in with a treat. But once he gets used to a soft, dry bed and having his own people, we are confident he'll get over that quickly! Sully has had no potty accidents in the house and is soaking up attention, probably for the first time in his life.
We anticipate that Sully will be ready for his forever home by the end of April. He is heartworm negative and will be brought up-to-date on all of his vaccination. We promise new and better pictures soon that will show him to be a handsome happy boy!

About Our Rescue
Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.
A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.
The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.
Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
